For this is a statute for Israel, A law of the God of Jacob. | 4For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. |
This He established in Joseph as a testimony, When He went throughout the land of Egypt, Where I heard a language I did not understand. | 5He ordained it as a testimony for Joseph when he went out over the land of Egypt, where I heard an unfamiliar language: |
“I removed his shoulder from the burden; His hands were freed from the baskets. | 6“I relieved his shoulder of the burden; his hands were freed from the basket. |
You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah | 7You called out in distress, and I rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah |
“Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you! O Israel, if you will listen to Me! | 8Hear, O My people, and I will warn you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me! |
There shall be no foreign god among you; Nor shall you worship any foreign god. | 9There must be no strange god among you, nor shall you bow to a foreign god. |
I am the LORD your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. | 10I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it. |
“But My people would not heed My voice, And Israel would have none of Me. | 11But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me. |
So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, To walk in their own counsels. | 12So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. |
“Oh, that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways! | 13If only My people would listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways, |
I would soon subdue their enemies, And turn My hand against their adversaries. | 14how soon I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes! |
The haters of the LORD would pretend submission to Him, But their fate would endure forever. | 15Those who hate the LORD would feign obedience, and their doom would last forever. |
He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat; And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you.” | 16But I would feed you the finest wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” |
