| 1Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? | 1This is what the LORD says: Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What house could you possibly build for Me? And what place could be My home? |
| 2For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the LORD. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word. | 2My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being. This is the LORD's declaration. I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and trembles at My word. |
| 3“He who kills a bull is as if he slays a man; He who sacrifices a lamb, as if he breaks a dog’s neck; He who offers a grain offering, as if he offers swine’s blood; He who burns incense, as if he blesses an idol. Just as they have chosen their own ways, And their soul delights in their abominations, | 3One slaughters an ox, one kills a man; one sacrifices a lamb, one breaks a dog's neck; one offers a grain offering, one offers pig's blood; one offers incense, one praises an idol-- all these have chosen their ways and delight in their detestable practices. |
| 4So will I choose their delusions, And bring their fears on them; Because, when I called, no one answered, When I spoke they did not hear; But they did evil before My eyes, And chose that in which I do not delight.” | 4So I will choose their punishment, and I will bring on them what they dread because I called and no one answered; I spoke and they didn't hear; they did what was evil in My sight and chose what I didn't delight in. |
| 5Hear the word of the LORD, You who tremble at His word: “Your brethren who hated you, Who cast you out for My name’s sake, said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified, That we may see your joy.’ But they shall be ashamed.” | 5You who tremble at His word, hear the word of the LORD:" Your brothers who hate and exclude you because of Me have said, Let the LORD be glorified so that we can see your joy!' But they will be put to shame." |

| 7“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; Before her pain came, She delivered a male child. | 7Before Zion was in labor, she gave birth; before she was in pain, she delivered a boy. |
| 8Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion was in labor, She gave birth to her children. | 8Who has heard of such a thing? Who has seen such things? Can a land be born in one day or a nation be delivered in an instant? Yet as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her sons." |
| 9Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?” says the LORD. “Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God. | 9Will I bring a baby to the point of birth and not deliver it?" says the LORD;" or will I who deliver, close the womb?" says your God. |
| 10“Rejoice with Jerusalem, And be glad with her, all you who love her; Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her; | 10Be glad for Jerusalem and rejoice over her, all who love her. Rejoice greatly with her, all who mourn over her-- |
| 11That you may feed and be satisfied With the consolation of her bosom, That you may drink deeply and be delighted With the abundance of her glory.” | 11so that you may nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breast and drink deeply and delight yourselves from her glorious breasts. |
| 12For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled on her knees. | 12For this is what the LORD says: I will make peace flow to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flood; you will nurse and be carried on her hip and bounced on her lap. |
| 13As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” | 13As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you, and you will be comforted in Jerusalem. |
| 14When you see this, your heart shall rejoice, And your bones shall flourish like grass; The hand of the LORD shall be known to His servants, And His indignation to His enemies. | 14You will see, you will rejoice, and you will flourish like grass; then the LORD's power will be revealed to His servants, but He will show His wrath against His enemies. |

| 16For by fire and by His sword The LORD will judge all flesh; And the slain of the LORD shall be many. | 16For the LORD will execute judgment on all flesh with His fiery sword, and many will be slain by the LORD." |
| 17“Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves, To go to the gardens After an idol in the midst, Eating swine’s flesh and the abomination and the mouse, Shall be consumed together,” says the LORD. | 17Those who dedicate and purify themselves to enter the groves following their leader, eating meat from pigs, vermin, and rats, will perish together." This is the LORD's declaration." |
| 18“For I know their works and their thoughts. It shall be that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and see My glory. | 18Knowing their works and their thoughts, I have come to gather all nations and languages; they will come and see My glory. |
| 19I will set a sign among them; and those among them who escape I will send to the nations: to Tarshish and Pul and Lud, who draw the bow, and Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands afar off who have not heard My fame nor seen My glory. And they shall declare My glory among the Gentiles. | 19I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from them to the nations--to Tarshish, Put, Lud (who are archers), Tubal, Javan, and the islands far away--who have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. And they will proclaim My glory among the nations. |
| 20Then they shall bring all your brethren for an offering to the LORD out of all nations, on horses and in chariots and in litters, on mules and on camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the LORD, “as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD. | 20They will bring all your brothers from all the nations as a gift to the LORD on horses and chariots, in litters, and on mules and camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem," says the LORD, "just as the Israelites bring an offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD. |
| 21And I will also take some of them for priests and Levites,” says the LORD. | 21I will also take some of them as priests and Levites," says the LORD." |
| 22“For as the new heavens and the new earth Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the LORD, “So shall your descendants and your name remain. | 22For just as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, will endure before Me"-- this is the LORD's declaration--" so your offspring and your name will endure. |
| 23And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD. | 23All mankind will come to worship Me from one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another," says the LORD." |
| 24“And they shall go forth and look Upon the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, And their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.” | 24As they leave, they will see the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against Me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never go out, and they will be a horror to all mankind." |
