Psalm 140
New King James VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent men,1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. Rescue me, LORD, from evil men. Keep me safe from violent men
Who plan evil things in their hearts; They continually gather together for war.2who plan evil in their hearts. They stir up wars all day long.
They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; The poison of asps is under their lips. Selah3They make their tongues as sharp as a snake's bite; viper's venom is under their lips. Selah
Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men, Who have purposed to make my steps stumble.4Protect me, LORD, from the clutches of the wicked. Keep me safe from violent men who plan to make me stumble.
The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; They have spread a net by the wayside; They have set traps for me. Selah5The proud hide a trap with ropes for me; they spread a net along the path and set snares for me. Selah
I said to the LORD: “You are my God; Hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." Listen, LORD, to my cry for help.
O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.7Lord GOD, my strong Savior, You shield my head on the day of battle.
Do not grant, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; Do not further his wicked scheme, Lest they be exalted. Selah8 LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let them achieve their goals. Otherwise, they will become proud. Selah
As for the head of those who surround me, Let the evil of their lips cover them;9When those who surround me rise up, may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.
Let burning coals fall upon them; Let them be cast into the fire, Into deep pits, that they rise not up again.10Let hot coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
Let not a slanderer be established in the earth; Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him.11Do not let a slanderer stay in the land. Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
I know that the LORD will maintain The cause of the afflicted, And justice for the poor.12I know that the LORD upholds the just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name; The upright shall dwell in Your presence.13Surely the righteous will praise Your name; the upright will live in Your presence.
