Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely.1It happened that when He went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching Him closely.
And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy.2And there in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.
And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”3And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"
But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go.4But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.
Then He answered them, saying, “Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”5And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"
And they could not answer Him regarding these things.6And they could make no reply to this.
So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them:7And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,
“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;8"When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,
and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this man,' and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place.
But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.10"But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you.
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”11"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.12And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.13"But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”14and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”15When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"
Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many,16But He said to him, "A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;
and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’17and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'
But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’18"But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.'
And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’19"Another one said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.'
Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’20"Another one said, 'I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'
So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’21"And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'
And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’22"And the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'
Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.23"And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.
For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’ ”24'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.'"
Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them,25Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them,
“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.26"If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.27"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it28"For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,29"Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,
saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?30saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'
Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?31"Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.32"Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.33"So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
“Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?34"Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?
It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”35"It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
