And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.1When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. After he sat down his disciples came to him.
Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:2Then he began to teach them by saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.4"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.5"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.7"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.10"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.11"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me.
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.12Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.13"You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.14You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.15People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.16In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them.
For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place.
Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.19So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.20For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’21"You have heard that it was said to an older generation, 'Do not murder,' and 'whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.'
But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.22But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says 'Fool' will be sent to fiery hell.
Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,23So then, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your gift.
Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.25Reach agreement quickly with your accuser while on the way to court, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the warden, and you will be thrown into prison.
Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.26I tell you the truth, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last penny!
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.30If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.
“Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’31"It was said, 'Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.'
But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’33"Again, you have heard that it was said to an older generation, 'Do not break an oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.'
But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;34But I say to you, do not take oaths at all--not by heaven, because it is the throne of God,
nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.35not by earth, because it is his footstool, and not by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.36Do not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.
But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.37Let your word be 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no.' More than this is from the evil one.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’38"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.39But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer. But whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.
If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.40And if someone wants to sue you and to take your tunic, give him your coat also.
And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.42Give to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants to borrow from you.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor' and 'hate your enemy.'
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,44But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.45so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors do the same, don't they?
And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?47And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don't they?
Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.48So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
