New King James VersionNew Living Translation
And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house.1When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home.
Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them.2Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them,
Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men.3four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.
And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.4They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.
When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”5Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”
And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,6But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
“Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”7“What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”
But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?8Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’?9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” —He said to the paralytic,10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,
“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”12And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)
Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them.13Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.
As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him.15Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”16But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum? ”
When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”17When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” A Discussion about Fasting
The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”18Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”
And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.19Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them.
But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.20 But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse.21 “Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”22 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.” A Discussion about the Sabbath
Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain.23One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”24But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him:25Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”26 He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.27Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”
