New King James VersionNew Living Translation
Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.1One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.
He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;2He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow;
and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.3 red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times!
A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.4 Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. ” Then Jesus left them and went away. Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.5Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread.
Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”6 “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”7At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread.
But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?8Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread?
Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?
Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up?10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?
How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’”
Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.12Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Peter’s Declaration about Jesus
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”14“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”15Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.17Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”
Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.20Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Jesus Predicts His Death
From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.21From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.
Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”22But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!”
But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”23Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.24Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds.
Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”28 And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”
