When David was settled in his palace, he summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant is out there under a tent!”1After David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”
Nathan replied to David, “Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.”2And Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
But that same night God said to Nathan,3But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in.4“Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build Me a house in which to dwell.
I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle.5For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved from tent to tent and dwelling to dwelling.
Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel’s leaders, the shepherds of my people. I have never asked them, “Why haven’t you built me a beautiful cedar house?”’6In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to shepherd My people, ‘Why haven’t you built Me a house of cedar?’
“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel.7Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!8I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past,9And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness oppress them as they did at the beginning
starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies. “‘Furthermore, I declare that the LORD will build a house for you—a dynasty of kings!10and have done since the day I appointed judges over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you.
For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong.11And when your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever.12He will build a house for Me, and I will establish his throne forever.
I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you.13I will be his Father, and he will be My son. And I will never remove My loving devotion from him as I removed it from your predecessor.
I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’”14But I will set him over My house and My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.”
So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision. David’s Prayer of Thanks15So Nathan relayed to David all the words of this entire vision.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and prayed, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?16Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O LORD God!17And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant and have regarded me as a man of great distinction, O LORD God.
“What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like.18What more can David say to You for so honoring Your servant? For You know Your servant,
For the sake of your servant, O LORD, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known.19O LORD. For the sake of Your servant and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed all Your greatness.
“O LORD, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!20O LORD, there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt. You performed awesome miracles and drove out the nations that stood in their way.21And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to redeem as a people for Himself? You made a name for Yourself through great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt.
You chose Israel to be your very own people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God.22For You have made Your people Israel Your very own forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
“And now, O LORD, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. May it be a promise that will last forever.23And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established forever. Do as You have promised,
And may your name be established and honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And may the house of your servant David continue before you forever.24so that Your name will be established and magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
“O my God, I have been bold enough to pray to you because you have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him—a dynasty of kings!25For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore Your servant has found the courage to pray before You.
For you are God, O LORD. And you have promised these good things to your servant.26And now, O LORD, You are God! And You have promised this goodness to Your servant.
And now, it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O LORD, it is an eternal blessing!”27So now You have been pleased to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”
