1 Chronicles 17
1. Nathan first approving the purpose of David, to build God a house
3. after by the word of God forbids him
11. He promises him blessings and benefits in his seed
16. David's prayer and thanksgiving

O LORD.
This phrase acknowledges the sovereignty and majesty of God, a central theme throughout the Bible. The use of "LORD" in all capitals signifies the Hebrew name Yahweh, emphasizing God's eternal and unchanging nature. This invocation sets the tone for a prayerful and reverent address to God, recognizing His authority and holiness.

For the sake of Your servant
"Your servant" refers to David, the king of Israel, who is often depicted as a model of servanthood to God. This phrase highlights the covenant relationship between God and David, where David is seen as God's chosen servant. It reflects the biblical theme of God working through His chosen individuals to fulfill His purposes, as seen in the lives of other biblical figures like Moses and the prophets.

and according to Your own heart
This phrase underscores the idea that God's actions are motivated by His own will and character, not by human merit. It reflects the biblical teaching that God's plans are rooted in His perfect wisdom and love. The concept of God's heart is significant in Scripture, indicating His desires and intentions, as seen in passages like 1 Samuel 13:14, where David is described as a man after God's own heart.

You have accomplished this great thing
The "great thing" refers to God's promise to establish David's dynasty, which is a pivotal moment in biblical history. This promise is part of the Davidic Covenant, where God assures David that his lineage will endure forever, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah. This accomplishment is a testament to God's faithfulness and power, as He brings His promises to fruition.

and made known all these great promises.
The "great promises" include the assurance of a lasting dynasty for David and the coming of a future king, the Messiah. These promises are central to the biblical narrative, pointing to the hope of redemption and the establishment of God's kingdom. The fulfillment of these promises is seen in the New Testament, where Jesus is recognized as the descendant of David and the fulfillment of God's covenant. This phrase emphasizes God's revelation of His plans to His people, demonstrating His desire for them to understand His purposes and trust in His faithfulness.

Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The King of Israel, chosen by God, who desires to build a temple for the Lord. In this chapter, God makes a covenant with David, promising to establish his throne forever.

2. Nathan the Prophet
A prophet during the reign of King David who delivers God's message to David regarding the Davidic Covenant.

3. The Davidic Covenant
A significant event where God promises David that his lineage will endure forever, and his kingdom will be established eternally.

4. Jerusalem
The city where David reigns as king and where he desires to build a temple for the Lord.

5. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant-keeping God who reveals His promises to David, emphasizing His sovereignty and faithfulness.
Teaching Points
God's Sovereignty and Faithfulness
God's promises are rooted in His sovereign will and faithfulness. He accomplishes His purposes according to His own heart, not based on human merit.

The Importance of God's Promises
The promises of God are central to the believer's faith. Understanding and trusting in God's promises provide hope and assurance.

The Role of Servanthood
David is referred to as God's servant, highlighting the importance of humility and servanthood in God's kingdom. Believers are called to serve God faithfully.

The Eternal Kingdom
The Davidic Covenant points to the eternal kingdom established through Jesus Christ. Believers are part of this kingdom, called to live with an eternal perspective.

God's Revelation
God reveals His plans and purposes to His people. Believers should seek to understand and align themselves with God's revealed will.(19) O Lord.--Not in Samuel. Probably belongs to end of last verse.

For thy servant's sake.--Comp. Psalm 132:10; 2Chronicles 6:42. Samuel has the more original "for thy word's sake." (Comp. 1Chronicles 17:23, and 1Chronicles 16:15.)

Heart--i.e., purpose, intent.

In making known all these great things. (greatnesses).--The repetition "greatness . . . greatnesses" is probably a scribe's error. Samuel has the right text: "Thou hast done all this greatness" (work of power, ???????), viz., informing Thy servant of what shall be hereafter. Isaiah makes the miracle of prediction a special difference between the true God and idols (Isaiah 41:21-29; Isaiah 45:11; Isaiah 45:21). . . .

Verse 19. - For thy servant's sake. The parallel place reads, "For thy word's sake." This reading is superior, and well suits the connection, suggesting also whether the first occurrence of the word "servant" in the previous verse might not be similarly explained. The similarity of the characters of the words in the Hebrew would render easy the exchange of the one word for the other.
