New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
This is what the LORD says: “The people of Moab have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They desecrated the bones of Edom’s king, burning them to ashes. | 1This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of Edom’s king. |
So I will send down fire on the land of Moab, and all the fortresses in Kerioth will be destroyed. The people will fall in the noise of battle, as the warriors shout and the ram’s horn sounds. | 2So I will send fire against Moab to consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in tumult, amid war cries and the sound of the ram’s horn. |
And I will destroy their king and slaughter all their princes,” says the LORD. God’s Judgment on Judah and Israel | 3I will cut off the ruler of Moab and kill all the officials with him,” says the LORD. |
This is what the LORD says: “The people of Judah have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They have rejected the instruction of the LORD, refusing to obey his decrees. They have been led astray by the same lies that deceived their ancestors. | 4This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Judah, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they reject the Law of the LORD and fail to keep His statutes; they are led astray by the lies in which their fathers walked. |
So I will send down fire on Judah, and all the fortresses of Jerusalem will be destroyed.” | 5So I will send fire upon Judah to consume the citadels of Jerusalem.” |
This is what the LORD says: “The people of Israel have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They sell honorable people for silver and poor people for a pair of sandals. | 6This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals. |
They trample helpless people in the dust and shove the oppressed out of the way. Both father and son sleep with the same woman, corrupting my holy name. | 7They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the earth; they push the needy out of their way. A man and his father have relations with the same girl and so profane My holy name. |
At their religious festivals, they lounge in clothing their debtors put up as security. In the house of their gods, they drink wine bought with unjust fines. | 8They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. And in the house of their God, they drink wine obtained through fines. |
“But as my people watched, I destroyed the Amorites, though they were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks. I destroyed the fruit on their branches and dug out their roots. | 9Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though his height was like that of the cedars, and he was as strong as the oaks. Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below. |
It was I who rescued you from Egypt and led you through the desert for forty years, so you could possess the land of the Amorites. | 10And I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, that you might take possession of the land of the Amorite. |
I chose some of your sons to be prophets and others to be Nazirites. Can you deny this, my people of Israel?” asks the LORD. | 11I raised up prophets from your sons and Nazirites from your young men. Is this not true, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. |
“But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine, and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’ | 12“But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy. |
“So I will make you groan like a wagon loaded down with sheaves of grain. | 13Behold, I am about to crush you in your place as with a cart full of grain. |
Your fastest runners will not get away. The strongest among you will become weak. Even mighty warriors will be unable to save themselves. | 14Escape will fail the swift, the strong will not prevail by his strength, and the mighty will not save his life. |
The archers will not stand their ground. The swiftest runners won’t be fast enough to escape. Even those riding horses won’t be able to save themselves. | 15The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will not escape, and the horseman will not save his life. |
On that day the most courageous of your fighting men will drop their weapons and run for their lives,” says the LORD. | 16Even the bravest of mighty men will flee naked on that day,” declares the LORD. |
