New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. | 1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion. |
Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. | 2Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. | 3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me. |
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. | 4Against You--You alone--I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge. |
For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. | 5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. |
But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. | 6Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within. |
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. | 7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me— now let me rejoice. | 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. |
Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. | 9Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. | 10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. | 11Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. | 12Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit. |
Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. | 13Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You. |
Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. | 14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness. |
Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you. | 15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. |
You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. | 16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering. |
The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. | 17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart. |
Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. | 18In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. | 19Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar. |
