| 1In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach | 1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, |
| 2until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. | 2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: |
| 3During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. | 3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: |
| 4Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. | 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. |
| 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” The Ascension of Jesus | 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. |
| 6So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” | 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? |
| 7He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. | 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. |
| 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” | 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. |
| 9After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. | 9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. |
| 10As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. | 10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; |
| 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!” Matthias Replaces Judas | 11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. |
| 12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. | 12Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. |
| 13When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James). | 13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. |
| 14They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus. | 14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. |
| 15During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them. | 15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) |
| 16“Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David. | 16Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. |
| 17Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.” | 17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. |
| 18(Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines. | 18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. |
| 19The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means “Field of Blood.”) | 19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. |
| 20Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.’ It also says, ‘Let someone else take his position.’ | 20For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. |
| 21“So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus— | 21Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, |
| 22from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus’ resurrection.” | 22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. |
| 23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. | 23And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. |
| 24Then they all prayed, “O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen | 24And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, |
| 25as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.” | 25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. |
| 26Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven. | 26And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. |
