| 1Now Adam had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, “With the LORD’s help, I have produced a man!” | 1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD." |
| 2Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground. | 2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
| 3When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. | 3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. |
| 4Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, | 4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; |
| 5but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. | 5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. |
| 6“Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? |
| 7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” | 7"If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." |
| 8One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him. | 8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. |
| 9Afterward the LORD asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?” | 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" |
| 10But the LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground! | 10He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground. |
| 11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood. | 11"Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.” | 12"When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth." |
| 13Cain replied to the LORD, “My punishment is too great for me to bear! | 13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear! |
| 14You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!” | 14"Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." |
| 15The LORD replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him. | 15So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him. |
| 16So Cain left the LORD’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. The Descendants of Cain | 16Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
| 17Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son. | 17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. |
| 18Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech. | 18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech. |
| 19Lamech married two women. The first was named Adah, and the second was Zillah. | 19Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. |
| 20Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents. | 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. |
| 21His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute. | 21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. |
| 22Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, gave birth to a son named Tubal-cain. He became an expert in forging tools of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah. | 22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
| 23One day Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; listen to me, you wives of Lamech. I have killed a man who attacked me, a young man who wounded me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; |
| 24If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times, then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!” The Birth of Seth | 24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |
| 25Adam had sexual relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth, for she said, “God has granted me another son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.” | 25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, "God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him." |
| 26When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. At that time people first began to worship the LORD by name. | 26To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD. |
