New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Justice—do you rulers know the meaning of the word? Do you judge the people fairly? | 1For the choir director; set to Al-tashheth. A Mikhtam of David. Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? |
No! You plot injustice in your hearts. You spread violence throughout the land. | 2No, in heart you work unrighteousness; On earth you weigh out the violence of your hands. |
These wicked people are born sinners; even from birth they have lied and gone their own way. | 3The wicked are estranged from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth. |
They spit venom like deadly snakes; they are like cobras that refuse to listen, | 4They have venom like the venom of a serpent; Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear, |
ignoring the tunes of the snake charmers, no matter how skillfully they play. | 5So that it does not hear the voice of charmers, Or a skillful caster of spells. |
Break off their fangs, O God! Smash the jaws of these lions, O LORD! | 6O God, shatter their teeth in their mouth; Break out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD. |
May they disappear like water into thirsty ground. Make their weapons useless in their hands. | 7Let them flow away like water that runs off; When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts. |
May they be like snails that dissolve into slime, like a stillborn child who will never see the sun. | 8Let them be as a snail which melts away as it goes along, Like the miscarriages of a woman which never see the sun. |
God will sweep them away, both young and old, faster than a pot heats over burning thorns. | 9Before your pots can feel the fire of thorns He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike. |
The godly will rejoice when they see injustice avenged. They will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. | 10The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. |
Then at last everyone will say, “There truly is a reward for those who live for God; surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth.” | 11And men will say, "Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely there is a God who judges on earth!" |
