The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,1Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there,
and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.2and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”3When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no wine left."
“Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”4Jesus replied, "Woman, why are you saying this to me? My time has not yet come."
But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”5His mother told the servants, "Whatever he tells you, do it."
Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.6Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled,7Jesus told the servants, "Fill the water jars with water." So they filled them up to the very top.
he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the head steward," and they did.
When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over.9When the head steward tasted the water that had been turned to wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom
“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”10and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the cheaper wine when the guests are drunk. You have kept the good wine until now!"
This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.11Jesus did this as the first of his miraculous signs, in Cana of Galilee. In this way he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. Jesus Clears the Temple12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.13Now the Jewish feast of Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.14He found in the temple courts those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at tables.
Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.15So he made a whip of cords and drove them all out of the temple courts, with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”16To those who sold the doves he said, "Take these things away from here! Do not make my Father's house a marketplace!"
Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”17His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will devour me."
But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”18So then the Jewish leaders responded, "What sign can you show us, since you are doing these things?"
“All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”19Jesus replied, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again."
“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?”20Then the Jewish leaders said to him, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and are you going to raise it up in three days?"
But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body.21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body.
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said. Jesus and Nicodemus22So after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the saying that Jesus had spoken.
Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him.23Now while Jesus was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, many people believed in his name because they saw the miraculous signs he was doing.
But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people.24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people.
No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.25He did not need anyone to testify about man, for he knew what was in man.
