| 1O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, |
| 2those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. | 2who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. |
| 3Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude | 3Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) |
| 4O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. | 4O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. |
| 5The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude | 5Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) |
| 6I said to the LORD, “You are my God!” Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy! | 6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! |
| 7O Sovereign LORD, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle. | 7O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. |
| 8LORD, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. Interlude | 8O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah) |
| 9Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me. | 9As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! |
| 10Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can’t escape. | 10May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. |
| 11Don’t let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent. | 11A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. |
| 12But I know the LORD will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor. | 12I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. |
| 13Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence. | 13Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. |
