New Living Translation | New International Version |
Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: | 1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: |
“How long before you stop talking? Speak sense if you want us to answer! | 2"When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk. |
Do you think we are mere animals? Do you think we are stupid? | 3Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your sight? |
You may tear out your hair in anger, but will that destroy the earth? Will it make the rocks tremble? | 4You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, is the earth to be abandoned for your sake? Or must the rocks be moved from their place? |
“Surely the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. The sparks of their fire will not glow. | 5"The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning. |
The light in their tent will grow dark. The lamp hanging above them will be quenched. | 6The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out. |
The confident stride of the wicked will be shortened. Their own schemes will be their downfall. | 7The vigor of his step is weakened; his own schemes throw him down. |
The wicked walk into a net. They fall into a pit. | 8His feet thrust him into a net; he wanders into its mesh. |
A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight. | 9A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast. |
A noose lies hidden on the ground. A rope is stretched across their path. | 10A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path. |
“Terrors surround the wicked and trouble them at every step. | 11Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step. |
Hunger depletes their strength, and calamity waits for them to stumble. | 12Calamity is hungry for him; disaster is ready for him when he falls. |
Disease eats their skin; death devours their limbs. | 13It eats away parts of his skin; death's firstborn devours his limbs. |
They are torn from the security of their homes and are brought down to the king of terrors. | 14He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors. |
The homes of the wicked will burn down; burning sulfur rains on their houses. | 15Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling. |
Their roots will dry up, and their branches will wither. | 16His roots dry up below and his branches wither above. |
All memory of their existence will fade from the earth; no one will remember their names. | 17The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land. |
They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world. | 18He is driven from light into the realm of darkness and is banished from the world. |
They will have neither children nor grandchildren, nor any survivor in the place where they lived. | 19He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived. |
People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified. | 20People of the west are appalled at his fate; those of the east are seized with horror. |
They will say, ‘This was the home of a wicked person, the place of one who rejected God.’” | 21Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who does not know God." |
