Applying Jotham's example in leadership?
How can we apply Jotham's example to our own leadership roles today?

Context That Matters

2 Kings 15:34 – 35: “He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. The high places, however, were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense there.”

2 Chronicles 27:6: “So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.”

• By the time we reach 2 Kings 15:38—“And Jotham rested with his fathers…”—Scripture sums up a reign marked by quiet faithfulness and steady strength.

What We Observe in Jotham

• Consistent personal righteousness (“did what was right in the sight of the LORD”).

• Refusal to participate in national corruption (2 Chronicles 27:2 notes he “did not enter the temple of the LORD” like his arrogant father had).

• Strategic builder and planner—he fortified walls, built cities, and strengthened defenses (2 Chronicles 27:3–4).

• Grew stronger “because he ordered his ways before the LORD” (v. 6).

• No record of him seeking applause; his reign is brief in print yet rich in impact.

Principles for Leadership Today

• Integrity outlasts visibility.

– Your leadership may never trend, but God records every upright choice (Psalm 15:1-2).

• Stay clear of sinful patterns—even those others excuse.

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world.”

• Build before the crisis.

– Jotham’s walls went up in peacetime; preventative action protects future generations (Proverbs 22:3).

• Strength flows from ordered ways.

– Daily disciplines—Scripture, prayer, honest work—form the scaffolding of lasting influence (Joshua 1:8).

• Finish without scandal.

2 Timothy 4:7 urges, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

Putting It into Practice

1. Audit your private life this week; remove any “high places” you tolerate.

2. List two areas at home or work that need “fortifying” (policies, relationships, accountability). Begin rebuilding.

3. Schedule consistent time with the Lord; order your ways before Him first, tasks second.

4. Seek zero spotlight actions—serve where only God sees, trusting Matthew 6:4.

5. Measure success by obedience, not applause; keep Colossians 3:23-24 before you.

Encouragement for the Long Haul

Hebrews 6:10: “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name.” Keep walking in Jotham’s steady footsteps, and the Lord who sees in secret will establish your leadership for His glory and others’ good.
