How can we actively listen in church?
In what ways can we actively "hear my instruction" in our church community?

Scripture Focus

“Receive My instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.” (Proverbs 8:10)

Understanding the Call to Hear

• “Receive” is an action word—taking hold of something offered.

• Wisdom is speaking; the church family becomes the place where that voice is amplified (Colossians 3:16).

• Because every word of God is true (Psalm 119:160), listening is never optional, always urgent (Hebrews 3:15).

Practical Ways to “Hear My Instruction” Together

• Prepare for gathered worship: pray, read the sermon text in advance, arrive early, minimize distractions (Nehemiah 8:3–4).

• Engage actively during preaching: open Bible in lap, follow cross-references, jot key points, mark confusing phrases to study later (Acts 17:11).

• Attend mid-week Bible studies and Sunday school classes; these settings allow dialogue and clarification (Acts 2:42).

• Participate in corporate Scripture reading: alternate voices, responsive readings, memorization recitations (1 Timothy 4:13).

• Join a small group: discuss the sermon, share applications, exhort one another daily (Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Seek out Titus 2 mentoring: older believers pour wisdom into younger, modeling godliness in real life.

• Welcome pastoral and elder counsel: “Remember your leaders… imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7).

• Sing doctrinally rich hymns and psalms; truth set to melody lodges deeply in the heart (Ephesians 5:19).

• Serve alongside others; lessons stick when practiced in ministry contexts (Philippians 4:9).

Cultivating Hearts Ready to Receive

• Confess known sin swiftly (James 1:21).

• Approach each gathering expecting God to speak (Psalm 62:5).

• Practice humility—“Speak, LORD, Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9).

• Fast or simplify time-consuming habits when spiritual dullness creeps in.

Maintaining Accountability and Perseverance

• Share weekly what you learned with a friend; hearing becomes doing (James 1:22–25).

• Keep a running “Obedience List” of specific actions drawn from sermons and studies.

• Invite loving correction when life drifts from the instruction received (Galatians 6:1).

• Celebrate answered prayer and visible growth; testimonies reinforce attentive hearts (Psalm 66:16).

Caution Against Neglect

• Selective hearing hardens hearts (Zechariah 7:11–12).

• Over-familiarity breeds contempt; treat every Scripture as fresh manna (Matthew 13:58).

• Entertainment-driven gatherings can drown out God’s voice; guard the purity of worship (2 Timothy 4:3–4).

Cumulative Blessings of Obedient Listening

• Personal wisdom that outshines worldly riches (Proverbs 3:13–15).

• A unified, maturing body—“attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).

• An unmistakable witness to the world: disciples who actually resemble their Teacher (John 13:34–35).
