In what ways can our "latter deeds exceed" our former ones today? Setting the Context “I know your deeds—your love, faith, service, and perseverance—and your latter deeds are greater than your first.” (Revelation 2:19) Jesus commends the believers in Thyatira because their present obedience outshines their past. The same pattern is available to us: growth that makes today’s obedience richer than yesterday’s and tomorrow’s richer than today’s. Seeing the Pattern • Proverbs 4:18 – “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday.” • Colossians 1:10 – “Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.” • 2 Peter 1:5-8 – Add to faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love. Scripture anticipates steady, Spirit-empowered increase, not stagnation. Areas Where Our Latter Deeds Can Exceed Our Former Ones Love and Compassion • Move from courtesy to costly sacrifice (1 John 3:18) • Seek reconciliation more quickly, forgive more deeply (Ephesians 4:32) Truth and Doctrine • Go beyond basic truths to “solid food” (Hebrews 5:12-14) • Defend the faith with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15) Service and Works • Shift from occasional volunteering to consistent, strategic ministry (1 Corinthians 15:58) • Develop skills that make service more effective and enduring Perseverance in Trials • Respond to setbacks with praise sooner than before (James 1:2-4) • Cultivate a testimony that encourages others undergoing similar trials Generosity and Stewardship • Graduate from token gifts to proportionate, joyful giving (2 Corinthians 9:6-8) • Budget intentionally so that kingdom priorities shape every expense Evangelism and Discipleship • Move from silent witness to verbal proclamation (Romans 10:14-15) • Invest in at least one younger believer, helping them reproduce disciples (2 Timothy 2:2) Holiness and Purity • Replace tolerated habits with Spirit-led self-control (Titus 2:11-12) • Guard heart and mind earlier—filtering media, thoughts, and conversations Worship and Devotion • Deepen private worship: longer, Scripture-saturated prayer (Psalm 119:97) • Engage corporate worship with fuller participation—sing, pray, listen, respond Practical Steps to Grow Today 1. Review: List last year’s acts of love, faith, service, perseverance. 2. Pray: Ask the Spirit to reveal specific areas for greater fruitfulness. 3. Plan: Set measurable, faith-stretching goals (Luke 14:28-30). 4. Partner: Invite accountability from mature believers (Hebrews 10:24-25). 5. Persist: “Let us not grow weary in well-doing” (Galatians 6:9). Encouragement from Scripture • Philippians 1:6 – “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” • 1 Thessalonians 4:1 – “Just as you now live to please God, do so even more.” • John 15:8 – “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and prove to be My disciples.” Final Charge The Lord who noticed Thyatira’s increasing obedience still watches His church. Let today’s obedience eclipse yesterday’s, so tomorrow’s can surpass today’s, until He returns and perfects us in glory. |
