How to be leaders, not followers today?
How can we ensure we are "the head and not the tail" today?

Deuteronomy 28:13

“The LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never downward if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you today and follow them carefully.”

What “Head and Not Tail” Means

• Leadership rather than subjection

• Influence rather than insignificance

• Victory rather than defeat (cf. Romans 8:37)

• A life that points others upward to God (Matthew 5:16)

Covenant Pattern Behind the Promise

1. Hear God’s voice — “If you will listen diligently” (Deuteronomy 28:1).

2. Obey completely — “Carefully follow all His commandments” (v. 1).

3. Blessing follows obedience — “All these blessings will come upon you” (v. 2).

Living the Pattern Today

1. Stay Saturated in Scripture

Joshua 1:8 — meditate day and night.

Psalm 1:2-3 — delight produces fruit; leaves never wither.

2. Quick, Full Obedience

John 14:21 — love proven by keeping His commands.

James 1:22 — doers, not hearers only.

3. Abide in Christ

John 15:5 — fruitfulness flows from “remain in Me.”

2 Corinthians 1:20 — every promise finds its “Yes” in Him.

4. Walk in Holiness

1 Peter 1:16 — “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Ephesians 5:3-4 — guard moral and verbal purity.

5. Practice Kingdom Priorities

Matthew 6:33 — seek first His kingdom and righteousness.

Proverbs 3:9-10 — honor the Lord with wealth; barns overflow.

6. Cultivate Humility and Service

Mark 10:43-44 — greatness through servanthood.

Philippians 2:3-4 — consider others above self.

7. Guard Your Associations

1 Corinthians 15:33 — bad company corrupts good morals.

Proverbs 13:20 — walk with the wise, become wise.

8. Persevere Through Testing

Galatians 6:9 — do not grow weary; harvest comes.

• Joseph (Genesis 39-41) — obedience under pressure led to promotion.

Christ, the Guarantee of Blessing

Galatians 3:13-14 — redeemed from the curse; blessing of Abraham comes by faith.

Ephesians 1:3 — “Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms” already ours in Him.

Daily “Head” Habits Checklist

• Start with worship and Word before the world’s noise.

• Speak Scripture over decisions and challenges.

• Choose integrity when shortcuts tempt.

• Encourage at least one person each day.

• Keep a thankful record of God’s faithfulness.

• Review finances and time to ensure Kingdom alignment.

• End the day confessing any sin quickly and receiving cleansing (1 John 1:9).

Final Encouragement

Walking in attentive obedience positions us where God always intended—above, not beneath; advancing, not retreating. Stay tethered to His Word, lean fully on His Spirit, and the promise of being “the head and not the tail” moves from ancient text to present-day testimony.
