How to help others facing lawlessness?
How can we support others struggling with "the conduct of the lawless"?

Verse Under the Lens

“and if He rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless” (2 Peter 2:7)

Who Was Lot, and Why Was He Troubled?

• Lot lived in Sodom, a society saturated with open rebellion against God (Genesis 13:13).

• Though surrounded by corruption, he remained “righteous” and was “distressed” (tormented, vexed) by what he saw and heard day after day (2 Peter 2:8).

• God literally intervened and pulled him out before judgment fell (Genesis 19:15-17). His story shows God’s commitment to preserve His people and His intolerance of unchecked evil.

Key Observations

• Grief over sin is normal for those who love God (Psalm 119:136).

• Distress does not equal defeat; Lot’s anguish prepared him for rescue.

• God sees and acts—He “knows how to rescue the godly” (2 Peter 2:9).

Our Call to Stand With Modern Lots

Just as God reached Lot, we are to reach those today who are worn down by lawlessness—friends, family, fellow believers, and even ourselves at times.

Practical Ways to Support

• Listen without minimizing their sorrow; validate that evil is truly evil (Romans 12:9).

• Pray with them and for them, believing God hears (James 5:16).

• Bring them back to the promises of Scripture—remind them that judgment and deliverance are real (Psalm 37:1-9).

• Encourage corporate worship and fellowship so they are not isolated (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Offer accountability and pure companionship that counter the surrounding darkness (Proverbs 27:17).

• Provide tangible help—safe spaces, resources, counsel—when lawlessness has practical fallout (Isaiah 58:6-7).

• Celebrate every glimpse of righteousness; reinforce that their anguish is a sign of spiritual life (Matthew 5:6).

Scriptural Anchors for Support

Galatians 6:2 — “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Romans 15:1 — “We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings of the weak.”

1 Thessalonians 5:14 — “Encourage the fainthearted, strengthen the weak, be patient with everyone.”

• Jude 22-23 — “And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt; save others, snatching them from the fire.”

Psalm 34:18 — “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Guarding Our Own Hearts While We Help

• Stay alert: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character’” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Keep feeding on the Word (Psalm 1:2-3).

• Put on the armor of God daily (Ephesians 6:10-18).

• Maintain gratitude and joy, resisting cynicism (Philippians 4:8-9).

Encouraging Perseverance and Hope

• God’s justice is certain: “For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more” (Psalm 37:10).

• Deliverance is promised: “The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials” (2 Peter 2:9).

• A flawless future awaits: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 21:4).

Standing beside those distressed by lawlessness means echoing God’s own heart: hating evil, loving righteousness, and trusting His sure rescue—just as He did for Lot.
