How to prevent a corrupt heart?
In what ways can we avoid developing a "perverse heart"?

Key Verse

Proverbs 11:20: “The LORD detests those of perverse heart, but He delights in those whose ways are blameless.”

What a “Perverse Heart” Is

• “Perverse” in Hebrew carries the ideas of crookedness, distortion, rebellion, willful deviation from God’s straight path (cf. Deuteronomy 32:5; Proverbs 17:20).

• The heart is the control center of thought, will, and affection (Proverbs 4:23).

• A perverse heart, then, is an inner life twisted away from God’s truth, producing words and actions He cannot approve (Matthew 15:18-19).

Why Guarding the Heart Matters

• God weighs motives, not just deeds (1 Samuel 16:7).

• Unchecked perversity invites His opposition instead of His delight (Proverbs 11:20; Psalm 101:4-5).

• Heart issues eventually surface in relationships, speech, and choices (Luke 6:45).

Practical Ways to Keep Our Hearts Straight

1. Nurture the Fear of the LORD

Proverbs 9:10—“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

• Regularly rehearse His holiness, power, and grace; reverence restrains crooked desires.

2. Guard the “Gates”

• Eyes—Psalm 101:3, Job 31:1.

• Ears—Proverbs 19:27.

• Mind—Philippians 4:8.

What we feed on shapes inner appetites.

3. Saturate the Heart with Scripture

Psalm 119:9-11—store God’s word to avoid sinning.

James 1:21-22—receive it humbly and do what it says.

Memorize, meditate, and immediately obey.

4. Cultivate Honest, Edifying Speech

Ephesians 4:29—use words that build up.

• When lips stay straight, they reinforce a straight heart (Proverbs 17:20).

5. Choose Companions Wisely

Proverbs 13:20—walk with the wise, grow wise.

1 Corinthians 15:33—“Bad company corrupts good morals.”

Fellowship with those who encourage righteousness.

6. Walk in the Spirit

Galatians 5:16—keep in step with Him to silence fleshly twists.

• Dependence, not mere willpower, produces genuine purity.

7. Practice Quick Repentance

Psalm 139:23-24—invite God’s searchlight.

1 John 1:9—confess immediately; He cleanses and straightens what began to bend.

8. Serve Others Selflessly

Philippians 2:3-4—consider others above self.

• A giving heart leaves less room for inward distortion.

Daily Heart-Maintenance Checklist

• Morning: Offer your day to God (Romans 12:1).

• Throughout the day:

– Filter inputs (media, conversations).

– Spot-check motives before decisions.

– Speak truth in love.

• Evening: Review the day with Scripture and repent where needed (Lamentations 3:40).

Encouragement from Scripture

• “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). He delights to answer that prayer.

• “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till midday” (Proverbs 4:18). Stay on the path and watch the light grow.
