How to ready hearts for giving?
How can we prepare our hearts for giving as instructed in 2 Corinthians 9:5?

Understanding 2 Corinthians 9:5

“So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and complete the arrangements for your generous gift you had promised, so that it will be ready as a gift and not as an exaction.” (2 Corinthians 9:5)

Paul’s concern was simple: generosity should spring from willing hearts, not reluctant wallets. The verse highlights two key ideas: planned preparation (“in advance”) and cheerful motivation (“not as an exaction”). Preparing the heart for giving means tending both areas.

Why the Heart Matters

• God looks first at motives, not amounts (1 Samuel 16:7).

• True generosity reflects God’s own character (John 3:16).

• Giving tests the sincerity of love (2 Corinthians 8:8).

Guarding Against Grudging Giving

• Recognize that reluctance robs the gift of its fragrance (Philippians 4:18).

• Remember that forced giving pictures “exaction,” a transaction rather than worship (Matthew 15:8–9).

• Reluctance often signals misplaced trust—money becomes security instead of God (Matthew 6:24).

Practical Steps to Prepare the Heart

1. Reflect on God’s generosity

• Meditate on Romans 8:32 and 2 Corinthians 8:9.

• Rehearse personal testimonies of His provision.

2. Plan ahead

• Set aside a portion “on the first day of every week” (1 Corinthians 16:2).

• Budget generosity just as intentionally as necessities.

3. Pray for willingness

• Ask the Lord to “incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to selfish gain” (Psalm 119:36).

4. Cultivate contentment

• Review Philippians 4:11–13; content hearts give freely.

5. Act in faith

• Sow bountifully, trusting the law of harvest (2 Corinthians 9:6).

• Practice obedience even when feelings lag; joy often follows action.

6. Celebrate opportunities

• See giving as partnership in gospel work (Philippians 1:5).

• Rejoice that needs are met and thanksgiving multiplies (2 Corinthians 9:12).

Scripture to Fuel Generosity

Proverbs 3:9 – “Honor the LORD with your wealth…”

Malachi 3:10 – “Test Me in this… and see if I will not open the floodgates of heaven.”

Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it will be given to you…”

Acts 20:35 – “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Fruit of Prepared Giving

• Abundant grace: “God is able to make all grace abound to you” (2 Corinthians 9:8).

• Enlarged harvest of righteousness (2 Corinthians 9:10).

• Overflowing thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 9:11–12).

A Living Testimony

When hearts are primed by gratitude, planned through wisdom, and propelled by faith, giving ceases to feel like loss. It becomes tangible worship, reflecting the lavish Giver who “loved us and gave Himself for us” (Galatians 2:20).
