How to remove obstacles in spirituality?
What steps can you take to remove "thorns" from your spiritual journey?

Seeing the Thorns Clearly

“Others are like the seed sown among the thorns. They hear the word, but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” (Mark 4:18-19)

Thorns represent anything that crowds out wholehearted devotion to Christ—cares, riches, and competing desires. Remaining fruitful means recognizing these threats and taking decisive action against them.

Identifying Common Thorns

• Worry and anxiety about daily needs (Matthew 6:31-32)

• Pursuit of wealth or status (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

• Unchecked appetites for pleasure, entertainment, or comfort (James 4:3)

• Habitual sins that entangle (Hebrews 12:1)

• Relationships or environments that dull spiritual hunger (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Practical Steps for Pulling Thorns

1. Intentional Heart Examination

• Invite the Spirit to search hidden motives: “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” (Psalm 139:23-24)

• Keep a journal of attitudes, expenditures, and time usage to spot patterns that choke spiritual growth.

2. Cast Worries on the Lord

• Replace anxiety with thankful petition—“Do not be anxious about anything….” (Philippians 4:6-7)

• Speak worries aloud in prayer, then refuse to pick them back up.

3. Simplify and Prioritize

• Trim schedules until worship, family discipleship, and rest have first place (Exodus 20:8-10).

• Ruthlessly eliminate digital noise and unnecessary commitments that crowd out time in the Word.

4. Wage War on Greed

• Practice regular, cheerful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7).

• Set concrete limits on lifestyle creep; learn contentment (Hebrews 13:5).

• Store up treasure in heaven, not on earth (Matthew 6:19-21).

5. Train Desires Toward God

• Fast periodically to remind the body it is not in charge (Matthew 6:17-18).

• Memorize Scripture that rebukes specific temptations (Psalm 119:11).

• Fill downtime with praise and edifying reading rather than mindless scrolling.

6. Strengthen Gospel Community

• Meet faithfully with believers who spur one another on to love and good works (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Invite accountability partners to point out emerging thorns early.

7. Keep Eyes on the Harvest

• Abide in Christ to bear lasting fruit (John 15:4-5).

• Remember the reward: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap.” (Galatians 6:9)

Cultivating an Uncluttered Soil

As each thorn is uprooted, replace it with truth, obedience, and worship. The Spirit empowers the work, but personal vigilance keeps the ground clear. Stay alert, keep pulling, and enjoy the unhindered growth of God’s Word in a heart free from choking thorns.
