Link Isaiah 57:15 & Matt 5:3 on humility.
Connect Isaiah 57:15 with Matthew 5:3 on the blessing of the humble.

Connecting the Two Verses

Isaiah 57:15:

“For this is what the high and exalted One says—

He who lives forever, whose name is holy:

‘I dwell in a high and holy place,

and also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,

to revive the spirit of the lowly

and to revive the heart of the contrite.’”

Matthew 5:3:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Both passages declare that the God who reigns in unreachable glory chooses to draw near to the humble. Isaiah highlights God’s willingness to “dwell” with the contrite; Jesus reveals that the lowly actually possess the kingdom itself.

The High and Holy One Who Stoops to Dwell

• God is “high and exalted … lives forever … holy.”

• Yet He chooses to reside “with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit.”

• The Almighty bridges the gap between infinite holiness and human frailty.

• His purpose: “to revive the spirit of the lowly … the heart of the contrite.”

– Revival implies fresh life, renewed strength, restored fellowship (cf. Psalm 34:18; Isaiah 66:1-2).

The Kingdom Promise to the Poor in Spirit

• “Poor in spirit” describes those who recognize their spiritual bankruptcy apart from God.

• Jesus pronounces them “blessed” (fully favored, enviably happy).

• Their reward: “the kingdom of heaven”—not merely future entrance, but present possession.

– See Luke 12:32; Colossians 1:13.

Shared Thread: Humility Welcomes God’s Nearness

• In Isaiah, humility invites God’s dwelling presence.

• In Matthew, humility grants kingdom inheritance.

• Whether expressed as contrition (Isaiah) or poverty of spirit (Matthew), the posture is the same: complete dependence on God’s mercy.

Blessings Promised to the Lowly

1. God’s Presence

– “I dwell … with the contrite” (Isaiah 57:15).

– “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

2. Spiritual Revival

– God “revives” the lowly (Isaiah 57:15).

– “He gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5-6).

3. Kingdom Ownership

– “Theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

– Present reality and future fulfillment (2 Timothy 4:18).

4. Divine Favor

– “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit” (Psalm 51:17).

– “He has brought down rulers … but has exalted the humble” (Luke 1:52).

Cultivating a Contrite Spirit Today

• Acknowledge daily dependence on God’s grace (Proverbs 3:5-6).

• Confess sin promptly, keeping a tender conscience (1 John 1:9).

• Embrace servant-hearted attitudes and actions (Philippians 2:3-4).

• Praise God for His nearness, even as He remains exalted (Psalm 138:6).
