Which Scriptures show God's covenant?
What other Scriptures highlight God's faithfulness in preserving His covenant promises?

Setting the Scene: David’s Weapons in Jehoiada’s Hands

“Then he gave to the commanders the spears and shields of King David that were in the house of the LORD.” (2 Kings 11:10)

Athaliah has murdered every royal heir she can find. Yet one small boy—Joash—has been hidden in the temple for six years. At the decisive moment the priest Jehoiada arms the guards with weapons once carried by David himself. Those spears and shields preach a silent sermon: God is still guarding the line He swore would never end (2 Samuel 7:12-16). Joash survives, David’s throne endures, and God’s covenant faithfulness shines again. Scripture repeats that same song in many keys.

Old Testament Snapshots of a Covenant-Keeping God

Genesis 17:7

“I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you….”

Exodus 2:24-25; 6:5

“God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.”

Deuteronomy 7:9

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations….”

Joshua 21:45

“Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; everything was fulfilled.”

1 Kings 8:56

“Not one word has failed of all His good promises, which He promised through His servant Moses.”

Psalm 89:33-34

“I will not violate My covenant or alter the utterance of My lips.”

Isaiah 54:10

“My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, “who has compassion on you.”

Jeremiah 31:35-37; 33:20-21

“If you can break My covenant with the day and…with the night, then My covenant with My servant David might also be broken….”

Davidic Covenant: Protected Through Peril

2 Samuel 7:16 promised David an unending dynasty.

2 Kings 11 shows that promise under siege yet intact.

Psalm 132:11-12 echoes it: “The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise He will not revoke….”

Ezekiel 37:24-26 looks ahead: “My servant David will be king over them…an everlasting covenant with them.”

Luke 1:32-33 points to the final Son of David: “He will reign over the house of Jacob forever.”

Abrahamic Covenant: The Family Line Preserved

Genesis 22:17-18—offspring as the stars and blessing to the nations.

Nehemiah 9:7-8—centuries later, that oath is still celebrated.

Luke 1:72-73—Zechariah praises God “to remember His holy covenant, the oath He swore to our father Abraham.”

Galatians 3:29—“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.”

Mosaic Covenant: Mercy Inside the Law

Leviticus 26:44-45—Even after exile discipline, “I will not reject them or abhor them…for I am the LORD their God. For their sake I will remember the covenant….”

Lamentations 3:22-23—In Jerusalem’s ruin, covenant mercy proves inexhaustible.

New Covenant: Every Promise Finds Its ‘Yes’ in Christ

Jeremiah 31:31-34—promise of a new heart and forgiven sins.

Ezekiel 36:26-28—Spirit-powered obedience and secure dwelling.

Luke 22:20—Jesus: “This cup is the new covenant in My blood….”

2 Corinthians 1:20—“For all the promises of God are ‘Yes’ in Christ.”

Hebrews 6:17-18—God confirmed His promise with an oath “so that by two unchangeable things…we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.”

Revelation 21:6-7—“He who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.”

Tracing the Golden Thread

1. What God swears, God sustains. Jehoiada’s use of David’s ancient weapons is one link in a chain that stretches from Abraham to Christ to the new creation.

2. Human sin, political upheaval, and even exile cannot sever His oath.

3. Every covenant points toward the ultimate fulfillment in Jesus, guaranteeing that those who belong to Him rest beneath the same unbreakable faithfulness.

Living in the Light of His Faithfulness

• Confidence: We can trust every word He has spoken.

• Security: Our salvation is anchored in an oath-keeping God.

• Hope: History, like Joash’s rescue, will climax exactly as He has promised—under the righteous reign of the greater Son of David.
