Which Scriptures show Pharisees vs. Jesus?
What other Scriptures highlight the Pharisees' opposition to Jesus' teachings and mission?

Setting the Scene: Their Resistance Continues beyond the Cross

Matthew 27:62–66 – Even after Jesus’ death, “the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate” (v. 62) to secure the tomb. Their opposition is relentless, rooted in fear that His word about rising again might prove true.

Early Skepticism in Galilee

Matthew 9:11 – “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Matthew 9:34 – “It is by the prince of demons that He drives out demons.”

Mark 2:16 – “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

These encounters show the Pharisees watching Jesus’ earliest ministry moments and questioning both His associations and power.

Accusations of Sabbath-Breaking

Matthew 12:2 – “Look, Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

Matthew 12:14 – “But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.”

Luke 6:7 – “The scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely…so that they might find a reason to accuse Him.”

Each Sabbath healing strengthened their resolve to oppose Him.

Charges of Demonic Alliance

Matthew 12:24 – “This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.”

Mark 3:22 – “He is possessed by Beelzebul.”

Luke 11:15 – “By Beelzebul the prince of demons He drives out demons.”

Such accusations aimed to discredit both His miracles and His mission.

Tradition over Truth

Matthew 15:2 – “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders?”

Mark 7:5 – “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders?”

Matthew 15:12 – The disciples report, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

Jesus exposes how their man-made rules nullify God’s Word (Matthew 15:6).

Demanding Signs, Ignoring Proof

Matthew 16:1 – “The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.”

Mark 8:11 – They “began to argue with Him” and “demanded from Him a sign from heaven.”

Their spiritual blindness rejected the very signs already given.

Testing Questions Designed to Trap

Matthew 19:3 – “Some Pharisees came to test Him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?’”

Matthew 22:15 – “The Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words.”

Matthew 22:35 – “One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him.”

From taxes to marriage to the greatest command, each question aimed at tripping Him up before the crowds.

Growing Conspiracy to Arrest and Kill

Matthew 21:45–46 – Perceiving His parables “were spoken about them,” “the chief priests and Pharisees sought to arrest Him.”

John 7:32 – “The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering…and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest Him.”

John 11:47–53 – After Lazarus is raised, “the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin” and from that day “they plotted to kill Him.”

The resurrection miracle only intensified their hostility.

Public Exposure of Hypocrisy

Matthew 23:13-36 – Seven times Jesus declares, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” His rebuke unmasks their pride, greed, and spiritual blindness, cementing their resolve against Him.

Final Steps toward the Cross

John 18:3 – Judas arrives with “a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees.”

John 19:6 – “When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, ‘Crucify Him! Crucify Him!’”

Matthew 27:62 – The next day they secure the tomb, seeking to silence the final proof of His deity.

Why It Matters

From first miracle to sealed tomb, Scripture consistently shows the Pharisees opposing Jesus’ authority, purity, and mission. Their hostility fulfills prophecy (Psalm 2:2; Isaiah 53:3) and paradoxically advances the very redemption they opposed, proving that God’s purposes stand firm no matter the resistance.

How can we guard against disbelief, as the Pharisees did in Matthew 27:62?
