Which scriptures stress humility?
What other scriptures emphasize humility over boasting in our Christian journey?

Setting the Stage in 2 Corinthians 11:21

“To my shame I concede that we were too weak for that. Yet whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking in foolishness—I also dare to boast.”

Paul’s “boasting” is tongue-in-cheek; he exposes how hollow self-promotion looks next to Christ’s sufficiency. From this launch point, Scripture repeatedly redirects our attention from self-glory to humble dependence on the Lord.

Why Humility Matters to God

Psalm 138:6 – “Though the LORD is on high, He attends to the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar.”

Isaiah 66:2 – “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.”

God Himself draws near to the humble and resists the proud; every other passage on humility flows out of this foundational truth.

Old Testament Voices Calling Us Low

Proverbs 27:2 – “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24 – “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom… But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me.”

Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O man, what is good… to walk humbly with your God.”

Psalm 34:2 – “My soul will boast in the LORD; let the oppressed hear and rejoice.”

These verses set the rhythm: praise belongs to the LORD; our part is humble obedience.

Jesus: The Humble King

Matthew 11:29 – “I am gentle and humble in heart.”

John 13:14-15 – “I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet… you should do as I have done for you.”

Philippians 2:5-8 – Christ “humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

Christ’s incarnation, service, and sacrificial death form the ultimate pattern: greatness expressed through lowliness.

Apostolic Exhortations for Everyday Disciples

Romans 12:3 – “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought.”

Ephesians 4:2 – “Be completely humble and gentle.”

Colossians 3:12 – “Clothe yourselves with… humility.”

James 4:6, 10 – “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

1 Peter 5:5-6 – “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another… so that in due time He may exalt you.”

Each writer echoes the same melody: humility is the Christian’s wardrobe; exaltation is God’s business, not ours.

Boasting Replaced by Glorying in the Lord Alone

1 Corinthians 1:31 – “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 10:17 – “But, ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.’”

Galatians 6:14 – “May I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The cross silences self-congratulation. Any “boast” worth making centers on the Lord’s work, not ours.

Practical Ways to Live Out These Truths

• Celebrate others’ successes—Proverbs 27:2 style—before they can speak for themselves.

• Begin and end each day thanking God for specific evidences of grace; gratitude is humility in action.

• Serve in hidden ways (Matthew 6:3-4); unseen service trains the heart away from applause.

• Confess sin quickly; nothing strips pride faster than honest repentance.

• Keep Christ’s cross in view (Galatians 6:14); remembering the price paid for our redemption keeps self-esteem in check and Christ-esteem high.

Scripture’s chorus is clear: humble dependence brings God’s favor, while self-promotion only empties us of the grace we most desperately need.
