Why visit the LORD's chosen place?
Why is it important to "go to the place the LORD chooses"?

Setting the Scene

Deuteronomy 12:5 sets the tone:

“But you are to seek the place that the LORD your God will choose from all your tribes to put His Name there for His dwelling. To that place you must go.”

This command is repeated (Deuteronomy 12:11, 14; 14:23-25; 16:2, 6), underscoring that God—not Israel—determines where worship happens.

Why God Names a Place

• He anchors worship in His revelation, not our imagination.

• He signals that fellowship with Him happens on His terms.

• He protects His people from blending true worship with pagan practices surrounding them (Deuteronomy 12:30-31).

Obedience Guards the Heart from Idolatry

• Choosing any convenient hill or shrine invited Israel to adopt the idols already there (2 Kings 17:9-12).

• Centralizing worship under God’s chosen priesthood ensured teaching that stayed faithful to the Law (Malachi 2:7).

• True worship demands separation from counterfeit devotion (2 Corinthians 6:16-17).

Covenant Identity Is Affirmed in the Chosen Place

• Gathering where God places His Name united all tribes under one Banner (Psalm 122:1-4).

• The sanctuary became a visible reminder that Israel belonged to the LORD (1 Kings 8:29).

• Celebrations such as Passover and Tabernacles rehearsed redemption history in one shared location (Deuteronomy 16:1-17).

Unity and Fellowship Flourish at the Chosen Place

• Families brought tithes and firstfruits there, eating “before the LORD” in joyful fellowship (Deuteronomy 14:23).

• Justice issues went there for final judgment (Deuteronomy 17:8-9), binding the nation together under one standard.

• Shared worship extinguished tribal rivalries (Judges 21:19-20 compared with 1 Kings 12:26-30, where ignoring God’s place reopened division).

Blessing Flows from Going Where God Names

• Obedience invited divine favor in the land (Deuteronomy 12:28).

• The place God chose became the center of answered prayer (2 Chronicles 7:15-16).

• Spiritual vitality rose when Israel returned to that place (2 Chronicles 30:11-27).

Foreshadowing the Ultimate Fulfillment

• God later chose Jerusalem and the temple (2 Chronicles 6:6).

• The pattern culminates in Christ: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). His body is now the true temple (John 2:21).

• Through Him we “draw near with a sincere heart” (Hebrews 10:19-22), making Jesus the living “place” the Father has chosen (John 14:6).

Living the Truth Today

• Anchor worship in God’s revelation, not personal preference.

• Gather with the covenant community where the Word is faithfully preached and Christ is honored (Hebrews 10:25).

• Guard against modern “high places” of entertainment, consumerism, or self-focused spirituality.

• Celebrate redemption regularly at the Lord’s Table, the appointed memorial of our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

Going to the place the LORD chooses still means coming to Him on His terms—through the Savior He has appointed, in the fellowship He has ordained, with the obedience He deserves.
