After a long time, in the third year of the drought, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth."

After a long time,

The extended drought had brought Israel into deep distress and exposed the emptiness of Baal worship, for Baal was believed to control rain and fertility. Elijah’s years of concealment also required patient trust in God’s provision and timing.

in the third year of the drought,

God’s judgment had continued long enough to reveal the seriousness of Israel’s idolatry under Ahab and Jezebel. Luke 4:25 and James 5:17 describe the withholding of rain as lasting three years and six months, apparently including the months before and after the third year identified here.

the word of the LORD came to Elijah:

Elijah did not act on personal impulse or political ambition. God directed His prophet at the appointed time, demonstrating that the drought, Elijah’s return, and the coming rain remained under the Lord’s sovereign control.

“Go and present yourself to Ahab,

Ahab had sought Elijah’s life and blamed him for Israel’s trouble, making this command dangerous. Elijah was sent back to stand before the king as God’s faithful messenger, much as Moses stood before Pharaoh to declare the Lord’s authority.

and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”

Rain would end the immediate judgment, but it would also follow the public defeat of Baal at Carmel and the nation’s call to turn again to the Lord. The promise revealed God’s mercy and faithfulness to His covenant, for He alone controls the heavens and gives life to the land.
