Its church had become a major base for Gentile ministry after believers scattered by persecution preached there, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:19–26). From this congregation the gospel would be sent outward through organized missionary work. Herod Antipas had ordered John the Baptist’s death and later mocked Jesus during His trial (Mark 6:17–28; Luke 23:7–11). Manaen’s place among Christ’s servants demonstrates that God’s grace reaches people connected with privilege and political power as surely as those from ordinary backgrounds.
