After removing Saul,God rejected Saul’s kingship because Saul repeatedly chose his own judgment over God’s command. Israel’s first king had been given a real responsibility under God’s authority, yet his disobedience showed that outward position cannot replace a faithful heart. Saul’s removal revealed that the Lord rules over every earthly ruler and holds leaders accountable to His word. 1Sa 15:26-28 “I will not return with you,” Samuel replied.… He raised up David as their king God chose David, the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem, and Samuel anointed him while Saul still reigned. David’s rise from shepherd to king displayed God’s freedom to exalt whom He chooses. Through David, God established the royal line of Judah and promised an enduring dynasty that would ultimately lead to the Messiah. 1Sa 16:12-13 So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in.… and testified about him: God Himself bore witness to David’s character and calling. Human assessments had overlooked David because of his youth and humble place within his family, but the Lord saw the heart. David was not chosen because he was sinless, but because he would return to God in repentance and submit himself to God’s purposes. 1Sa 16:1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, How long are you going to mourn… ‘I have found David son of Jesse David belonged to the tribe of Judah, the tribe associated with the promised ruler in Jacob’s blessing. His identity as Jesse’s son also connects him to the covenant promises later fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the greater Son of David and rightful King. Psa 89:20-21 I have found My servant David; with My sacred oil… a man after My own heart; David desired God’s favor, sought God’s direction, and received correction when he sinned. His failures, including grievous sins, did not define the direction of his life; his repentance demonstrated a heart that acknowledged God’s holiness and depended on His mercy. Many of David’s psalms preserve this devotion, grief over sin, confidence in God’s forgiveness, and hope in God’s kingdom. 1Sa 13:14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought… he will carry out My will in its entirety.’ David fulfilled God’s purposes in his generation by establishing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, bringing the ark there, defeating Israel’s enemies, and preparing for the temple his son Solomon would build. Yet David’s obedience was incomplete and imperfect, pointing beyond him to Jesus Christ. Jesus perfectly carried out the Father’s will and fulfilled the promises attached to David’s throne.
