(The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings.)

The cherubim appeared: Ezekiel recognized these living beings as the cherubim he had seen by the Kebar Canal. They attended the glory of God and moved with His throne as His judgment came upon Jerusalem. to have the form of human hands: Their hands show that the cherubim were able to carry out God’s commands. In the surrounding vision, one of them received fire from between the wheels to scatter over the city. under their wings: The hands were beneath the wings, joining strength for service with the swift movement of the heavenly beings. Their actions were directed entirely by the presence and command of God.

1Ki 8:6-7 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant…

Then I looked and saw four wheels beside the cherubim,

Ezekiel again sees the living chariot-throne of God, now in the temple precincts as judgment approaches Jerusalem. The cherubim attend the manifest presence of the Lord, and the wheels show that He is not confined to the temple. He moves in sovereign judgment wherever He wills.

Ezk 1:15 When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel…
1Ki 7:27-30 In addition, he made ten movable stands of bronze,…
2Ch 4:13-16 four hundred pomegranates for the two sets of network…

Exo 25:18-22 Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends…
1Ki 6:23-29 In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim…

And the wheels gleamed like a beryl stone.

Their radiant appearance reflects the splendor and purity of the divine glory. Even as the Lord prepares to depart from the defiled temple, His actions remain holy, righteous, and fully under His control.

Ezk 1:16 The workmanship of the wheels looked like the gleam of beryl…
Dan 10:6 His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance…

As for their appearance,

Ezekiel continues describing the living creatures and wheels, symbolic of God’s divine presence and the complexity of creation, associated with the glory of God as it prepared to depart from the defiled temple.

Ezk 1:13 In the midst of the living creatures was the appearance…
Rev 4:6 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,…

When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions,

The cherubim moved freely in every direction, reflecting the all-encompassing reach of God’s glory and authority. Their movement showed that the divine presence was not confined to Jerusalem, the temple, or any earthly boundary.

Ezk 1:17 As they moved, they went in any of the four directions…
Zec 6:5 And the angel told me, “These are the four spirits of heaven…

Ezk 1:9 and their wings were touching one another.…
Ezk 1:12 Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit…

For wherever the head faced, the cherubim would go in that direction,

The direction of the heads governed the movement of the entire living creature. The cherubim acted in complete submission to God’s will, carrying His glory wherever He directed during Ezekiel’s vision of judgment against Jerusalem.

Ezk 1:20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go…
Ezk 1:21 When the creatures moved, the wheels moved…

Rev 5:6 Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain,…

as were their four wheels.

The wheels, which moved with the cherubim beneath the throne-chariot, were likewise marked by perfect awareness, showing that God’s judgments and movements are never blind, random, or beyond His control.

Ezk 1:15-16 When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel…
Ezk 1:19-21 So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved…
Dan 7:9 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,…

I heard the wheels being called

Ezekiel received the vision as both sight and sound, confirming the divine authority of what he witnessed. The wheels belonged to the living creatures and accompanied the glory of the LORD, revealing His sovereign presence and freedom to act throughout creation.

Ezk 1:15-21 When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel…
Jer 47:3 at the sound of the galloping hooves of stallions,…
Dan 7:9 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,…

“the whirling wheels.”

Each of the cherubim had four faces:

Ezekiel’s vision presents the cherubim as attending the glory of God and carrying out His will in judgment. Their multiple faces display the fullness of the created order under God’s rule and their constant readiness to move in any direction without turning.

Ezk 1:10 The form of their faces was that of a man…
Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,…
Gen 3:24 So He drove out the man and stationed cherubim…

the first face was that of a cherub,

The cherub face identifies these beings with the guardians of God’s holiness. In this vision, the living creatures seen earlier are explicitly called cherubim, emphasizing their role near the divine throne and presence.

Psa 99:1 The LORD reigns; let the nations tremble!…
Exo 25:18-22 Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends…

the second that of a man,

The human face reflects the highest order of earthly life and the responsibility of mankind within creation. Even Jerusalem’s coming judgment would not place humanity beyond God’s knowledge or authority.

Gen 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,…
Dan 7:13 In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw…

the third that of a lion,

The lion represents strength and royal power. God’s judgment against His rebellious people would be carried out with irresistible authority.

Gen 49:9-10 Judah is a young lion—my son, you return from the prey.…
Pro 30:30 a lion, mighty among beasts, refusing to retreat…

and the fourth that of an eagle.

Deu 32:11 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…
Isa 40:31 But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength…

Then the cherubim rose upward.

The cherubim moved with the glory of God, showing that His throne is active and sovereign over events on earth. Their ascent signals the approaching departure of God’s glory from the temple as judgment draws near upon Jerusalem for persistent idolatry and rebellion.

Ezk 1:19-21 So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved…
Ezk 11:22-24 Then the cherubim, with the wheels beside them,…
Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,…

These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar.

The wheels moved beside the cherubim, never acting independently or falling behind. Their coordinated movement reveals the perfect order of God’s rule as He carries out judgment against Jerusalem and its corrupt leaders.

Dan 7:9 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,…
Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,…

and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground,

Even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the cherubim were ready to bear the divine glory from the temple. Their ascent signaled the withdrawal of God’s manifest presence from a sanctuary defiled by the people’s sin.

Ezk 1:24-25 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings…
Exo 19:4 You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt,…
Deu 32:11-12 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…

the wheels did not veer away from their side.

The wheels remained beside the cherubim because the same Spirit directed both. Nothing in the vision moved randomly; every action occurred according to God’s authority and purpose.

Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Ezk 3:15 I came to the exiles at Tel-abib who dwelt by the River…

and I knew that they were cherubim.

Their identification as cherubim connects them with the guardians of sacred holiness and the throne imagery associated with God’s dwelling among His people.

Ezk 28:14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained…
Exo 25:18-20 Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends…

Ezekiel recognized the same cherubim he had seen in his first vision among the exiles near the Kebar Canal in Babylon. Their human, lion, ox, and eagle faces displayed God’s wisdom, kingly power, strength, and swift sovereignty. Their appearance in Jerusalem showed that the Lord’s glory was not confined to the temple or absent from His people in exile.
