The message carried the authority of the sovereign LORD, whose purpose for Israel could not be defeated by exile, foreign rulers, or the people’s sin. The command follows the vision of dry bones, in which God showed that He alone could restore what appeared beyond recovery. Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen… ‘O My people, The LORD still claimed Israel as His covenant people. Though Jerusalem had fallen and many Israelites lived in Babylon, God had not abandoned the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. His discipline had been severe, but His covenant faithfulness remained. Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,… I will open your graves and bring you up from them, The graves portray Israel’s condition among the nations: scattered, hopeless, and cut off from the land of promise. God promised to reverse that condition by His own power, restoring a people who could not restore themselves. The imagery also accords with the wider biblical hope of bodily resurrection, later declared in Daniel 12:2 and fulfilled in Christ’s resurrection, the foundation of eternal life for all who belong to Him. God’s restoration included a real return to the land He had promised to the patriarchs. The return from Babylon under Zerubbabel and later generations displayed a partial fulfillment, yet the surrounding prophecies anticipate Israel’s fuller national renewal under God’s rule. The land remains a testimony that the LORD keeps His promises and gathers His people according to His covenant purpose.
