Israel’s settlement in Canaan fulfilled the Lord’s covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:7; 15:18–21; 26:3; 28:13). Eleazar, Aaron’s son and successor as high priest, represented the Lord’s authority in the division of the land. Joshua son of Nun,

Joshua had led Israel across the Jordan, directed the conquest, and now oversaw the settlement of the tribes. His faithful service carried forward the work entrusted to him by Moses and confirmed God’s promise that He would give Israel rest in the land.
