Joshua 2:11
When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
When we heard this,

Rahab referred to Israel’s crossing of the Red Sea and the defeat of Sihon and Og east of the Jordan. Though these events had occurred years earlier, the report of the Lord’s deliverance and judgment had reached Jericho and remained a source of dread.

Jos 5:1 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan…
Hab 3:2 O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe…
Exo 15:14 The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip…

our hearts melted

The people of Canaan had lost confidence before Israel entered the land. Their fear fulfilled the Lord’s promise that the nations would tremble at His mighty acts on behalf of His people (Exodus 15:15–16).

Jos 7:5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,…
Deu 1:28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt,…
Isa 13:7 Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart…

and everyone’s courage failed because of you,

Jericho recognized that Israel’s strength did not rest merely in numbers or military skill. The God who fought for Israel had already shaken the resolve of the land’s inhabitants, as He had promised (Deuteronomy 2:25).

Deu 11:25 No man will be able to stand against you;…
Deu 20:8 Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying,…
Exo 23:27 I will send My terror ahead of you and throw into confusion…

for the LORD your God

Rahab named Israel’s covenant God, YHWH, and acknowledged Him above the false gods of Canaan. Her confession marked a decisive turn from the idolatry of her city toward faith in the living God.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart…

is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.

Rahab confessed the Lord’s universal rule over all creation, echoing the truth later declared in Deuteronomy 4:39. Her faith led to her rescue and incorporation into Israel, and she became an ancestor of David and of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).

Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart…
Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…

The Country of Jericho, and the Situation of the City.
Here we will borrow Josephus' pencil, "Jericho is seated in a plain, yet a certain barren mountain hangs over it, narrow, indeed, but long; for it runs out northward to the country of Scythopolis,--and southward, to the country of Sodom, and the utmost coast of the Asphaltites." Of this mountain mention is made, Joshua 2:22, where the two spies, sent by Joshua, and received by Rahab, are said to "conceal themselves." "Opposite against this, lies a mountain on the other side Jordan, beginning from

But, as for that which is Written, that God did Good to the Hebrew...
32. But, as for that which is written, that God did good to the Hebrew midwives, and to Rahab the harlot of Jericho, [2444] this was not because they lied, but because they were merciful to God's people. That therefore which was rewarded in them was, not their deceit, but their benevolence; benignity of mind, not iniquity of lying. Joshua
The book of Joshua is the natural complement of the Pentateuch. Moses is dead, but the people are on the verge of the promised land, and the story of early Israel would be incomplete, did it not record the conquest of that land and her establishment upon it. The divine purpose moves restlessly on, until it is accomplished; so "after the death of Moses, Jehovah spake to Joshua," i. 1. The book falls naturally into three divisions: (a) the conquest of Canaan (i.-xii.), (b) the settlement of the
