Revelation 8
Berean Study Bible

The Seventh Seal

When the Lamb opened the seventh seal,

Jesus Christ alone possesses the authority to bring God’s redemptive plan and judgment to its appointed completion. The seventh seal completes the series begun in Revelation 6 and opens the way for the trumpet judgments that follow. Heaven’s events remain under the Lamb’s sovereign direction even as judgment falls upon the earth.

Rev 5:5-7 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold…
Rev 6:1 Then I watched as the Lamb opened one of the seven seals,…

there was silence in heaven

The worshiping multitudes, angels, and living creatures cease their praise before the holiness of God and the seriousness of His coming judgments. The silence reflects the solemnity seen when God rises to act in judgment (Habakkuk 2:20; Zephaniah 1:7). It also prepares for the prayers of the saints to be presented before God and for the sounding of the seven trumpets.

Hab 2:20 But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth…
Zec 2:13 Be silent before the LORD, all people, for…

for about half an hour.

The half hour marks a real, divinely ordered interval in heaven, emphasizing that the judgments about to begin are neither rushed nor uncontrolled. The pause heightens anticipation as heaven recognizes the gravity of God’s righteous response to human rebellion and to the suffering of His people.

Heb 10:37 “In just a little while, He who is coming will come…”…
Jhn 16:16 In a little while you will see Me no more,…

And I saw

John continues to record the visions granted to him during his exile on Patmos. What follows belongs to the ordered unveiling of God’s coming judgments and demonstrates that heaven directs the events about to occur on earth.

the seven angels

Seven denotes the completeness of God’s purpose. These angels form a distinct company appointed for a particular service in the heavenly court, ready to administer the judgments entrusted to them.

who stand before God,

Their station before God reveals continual readiness, honor, and submission to His authority. Gabriel described himself in the same way when speaking to Zechariah, showing that angels carry out God’s commands as His holy servants.

1Ki 22:19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:…
Job 1:6 One day the sons of God came to present themselves…

and they were given seven trumpets.

The trumpets announce successive judgments upon a rebellious world. Throughout Scripture, trumpets summoned God’s people, signaled warfare, and proclaimed divine intervention; here they herald the advancing day of the Lord and the certainty that God will judge evil while accomplishing His redemptive plan.

Jos 6:4-20 Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns…
Num 10:1-10 Then the LORD said to Moses,…
Exo 19:16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder…

Then another angel,

A distinct angel enters the heavenly scene as the seventh seal gives way to the trumpet judgments. Angels throughout Revelation carry out God’s commands with perfect obedience, whether announcing events, protecting God’s people, or administering judgment.

Rev 18:1 After this I saw another angel descending from heaven…
Rev 10:1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven,…
Rev 14:6 Then I saw another angel flying overhead,…

who had a golden censer,

The angel bears a vessel associated with priestly worship and the burning of incense. The gold reflects the holiness and glory of the heavenly sanctuary, of which Israel’s tabernacle and temple were earthly patterns.

Heb 9:4 containing the golden altar of incense…
Lev 16:12-13 Then he must take a censer full of burning coals…
Num 16:46-48 Take your censer, place fire from the altar in it…

came and stood at the altar.

The angel takes his appointed place at the heavenly altar of incense before God’s throne. His standing there shows reverent readiness to minister in God’s presence.

Luk 1:11-13 Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah…
2Ch 6:12-13 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD…
Exo 40:26-27 Moses placed the gold altar in the Tent of Meeting…

He was given much incense to offer,

God provides the incense, showing that acceptable worship and intercession come before Him according to His own provision. The abundance of incense accompanies the full measure of prayer ascending from God’s people.

Exo 30:7-8 And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it…
Luk 1:9-10 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom…
2Ch 26:16-19 But when Uzziah became powerful, his arrogance…

along with the prayers of all the saints,

The prayers include the worship, petitions, cries for deliverance, and appeals for justice offered by believers. The martyrs beneath the altar had already cried for God to judge those who shed their blood, and the coming trumpet judgments reveal that God has not ignored the prayers of His people.

on the golden altar before the throne.

The altar stands immediately before the sovereign throne of God, revealing that the prayers of the saints reach His presence. What follows shows that prayer is joined to God’s righteous action in history, as fire from the altar is cast upon the earth in judgment.

Exo 30:1-6 You are also to make an altar of acacia wood…
Rev 4:5-6 From the throne came flashes of lightning…

And the smoke of the incense,

Incense belonged to the daily worship of the tabernacle and temple, rising from the altar before the Lord morning and evening (Exodus 30:7–8). Its fragrant smoke pictured worship offered acceptably in God’s presence.

Luk 1:8-10 One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty…
Psa 141:2 May my prayer be set before You like incense;…

together with the prayers of the saints,

The incense accompanies the petitions of God’s redeemed people, including their cries for deliverance and justice under persecution (Revelation 6:9–11). God receives the prayers of His people as precious offerings, fulfilling the pattern of Psalm 141:2.

Rev 5:8 When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures…
Rev 6:9-10 And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal…

rose up before God

Prayer reaches the throne of heaven. Though God’s people may suffer on earth, their appeals are neither overlooked nor delayed beyond His perfect purpose; they stand before Him as He prepares to act in judgment and redemption.

Act 10:4 Cornelius stared at him in fear and asked…
2Ch 30:27 Then the priests and the Levites stood to bless the people,…

from the hand of the angel.

The angel ministers before God’s altar as a servant within the heavenly order. His service magnifies the holiness of prayer while directing all attention to God, who hears His saints and governs the events soon to unfold.

Luk 1:11-13 Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah…
Dan 9:21-23 while I was still praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen…

Then the angel took the censer,

The angel who presented the prayers of the saints before God now takes up the same censer. Heaven has received the cries of God’s people, and God’s answer proceeds from His throne. The censer joins priestly intercession with the coming administration of justice.

Lev 16:12-13 Then he must take a censer full of burning coals…
Lev 10:1-2 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers,…
2Ch 26:16-19 But when Uzziah became powerful, his arrogance…

filled it with fire from the altar,

Fire from the heavenly altar is holy fire, connected with the worship and presence of God. As incense rose with the prayers of the saints, the fire now becomes the means by which God answers those prayers. The altar that receives worship also supplies judgment against unrepentant evil.

Num 16:46-48 Take your censer, place fire from the altar in it…
Isa 6:6-7 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand…
Lev 6:12-13 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…

and hurled it to the earth;

The casting of fire upon the earth marks the beginning of direct divine judgment during the tribulation. Ezekiel saw coals scattered over Jerusalem before its judgment, and Jesus spoke of bringing fire upon the earth. God’s judgments are neither arbitrary nor detached from the suffering of His people; they answer the accumulated rebellion of the world and vindicate His holiness.

and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

These manifestations recall God’s descent at Mount Sinai, when thunder, lightning, and earthquake revealed His fearful majesty. Similar signs accompany major movements of judgment throughout Revelation. The heavenly silence of the preceding scene gives way to unmistakable evidence that the Lord has risen to act.

The First Four Trumpets

And the seven angels

Seven angels stand ready as appointed servants of God’s throne, carrying out His purposes in the unfolding judgment of the world. The number seven reflects the completeness and perfection of God’s plan, just as creation was completed in seven days.

Rev 15:1 Then I saw another great and marvelous sign in heaven:…
Rev 15:6 And out of the temple came the seven angels…
Rev 15:7 Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels…

with the seven trumpets

The trumpets announce decisive divine intervention, recalling Sinai, Jericho, and the prophetic warnings of the Day of the Lord. Each blast will reveal that God’s judgments are deliberate, righteous, and fully under His authority.

Jos 6:4 Have seven priests carry seven rams’ horns…
Jos 6:6 So Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and said, …
Jos 6:13 And the seven priests carrying seven rams’ horns…

prepared to sound them.

Heaven is poised for the judgments that follow, and the silence of Revelation 8:1 gives way to solemn action. The angels’ readiness displays the certainty of God’s word and calls people to recognize the urgency of repentance before final judgment comes.

1Co 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye…
1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven…
Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…

Then the first angel sounded his trumpet,

The first trumpet judgment begins after the opening of the seventh seal, announcing a new stage in God’s dealings with a rebellious world. Trumpets summoned Israel for assembly, warned of war, and marked the presence and action of God (Numbers 10:2–10). The sounding also recalls Jericho, where trumpet blasts preceded the fall of a fortified city under divine judgment (Joshua 6:4–5).

Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…
1Co 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye…

and hail and fire mixed with blood were hurled down upon the earth.

Hail and fire recall the plague God sent upon Egypt when Pharaoh hardened his heart (Exodus 9:23–25). Blood adds the unmistakable reality of death to the catastrophe and echoes the earlier judgment in which Egypt’s waters became blood (Exodus 7:19–21). The judgment comes from heaven, demonstrating that creation itself remains under the authority of its Creator.

Exo 9:23-24 So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven,…
Ezk 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed.…
Jol 2:30-31 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,…

A third of the earth was burned up,

The destruction is immense, yet it is limited to a third rather than consuming the whole earth. God’s judgment is measured, giving warning before the final outpouring of wrath. Fire reveals the devastating consequences of sin and anticipates the future cleansing and renewal of creation under Christ’s reign.

Ezk 5:2 When the days of the siege have ended, you are to…
Zec 13:8-9 And in all the land, declares the LORD,…
2Pe 3:10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief.…

along with a third of the trees

Trees provide shade, fruit, timber, and stability for human life. Their loss brings severe damage to the land, agriculture, and economy. What humanity often treats as permanent and dependable can be removed in a moment by the Lord who sustains all life.

Exo 10:15 They covered the face of all the land until it was black,…
Jol 1:7 It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree.…
Isa 10:33-34 Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will lop off the branches…

and all the green grass.

The burning of all green grass devastates pastureland and food sources, affecting both people and animals. Grass also pictures the frailty of human life: “All flesh is grass” (Isaiah 40:6–8). In contrast to the fading world, the word of God endures, and the judgments call people to turn from earthly security to the living God.

Isa 15:6 The waters of Nimrim are dried up, and the grass is withered…
Jer 14:6 Wild donkeys stand on barren heights; they pant for air…
Jol 1:18-20 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion…

Then the second angel sounded his trumpet,

The second trumpet judgment follows the devastation of the earth’s vegetation under the first trumpet. Trumpets in Israel summoned the people, signaled battle, and marked sacred assemblies; in Revelation they announce God’s advancing judgments upon a rebellious world. The judgments unfold in ordered stages, displaying both God’s sovereignty and His warning before the final outpouring of wrath.

Jol 2:1 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm…
1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven…
Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…

and something like a great mountain burning with fire

John sees an immense object resembling a flaming mountain, an image of overwhelming size, violence, and divine judgment. The description allows for a literal catastrophic object, whether from the earth or the heavens, while also recalling biblical portrayals of kingdoms and powers as mountains. Fire consistently accompanies God’s righteous judgment, as in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the plagues upon Egypt.

Heb 12:18 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched…
Exo 19:18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke,…
Deu 4:11 You came near and stood at the base of the mountain…

was thrown into the sea.

The event occurs by divine command rather than natural accident. The sea, long associated with danger, chaos, and the restless nations, receives the burning mass and becomes the setting for widespread death and disruption. God’s authority extends over every realm of creation, including the waters upon which nations depend for food, commerce, and travel.

Mrk 11:23 Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain,…
Psa 46:2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth…
Mat 21:21 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith…”…

A third of the sea turned to blood,

The sea’s transformation into blood recalls the first plague upon Egypt, when the Nile was turned to blood before Pharaoh. Death, corruption, and the removal of life-sustaining resources result from this judgment. The limitation to one third shows that the judgment is severe but not yet total, leaving humanity with a sober warning of the greater judgments still to come.

Rev 16:3 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…
Exo 7:20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded;…
Psa 78:44 He turned their rivers to blood, and from their streams…

a third of the living creatures in the sea died,

The second trumpet judgment brings real devastation to the marine world after the sea is struck and becomes like blood. The repeated “third” marks a measured but severe judgment, leaving room for repentance while revealing God’s authority over creation. The plague recalls Egypt, where the Nile was turned to blood and its fish died (Exodus 7:20–21). Hosea also connected the perishing of sea creatures with human rebellion against God (Hosea 4:3). Life sustained by the sea is disrupted as the world experiences the consequences of divine wrath.

Rev 16:3 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…
Exo 7:21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad…
Psa 105:29 He turned their waters to blood and caused…

and a third of the ships were destroyed.

The destruction of ships brings widespread commercial and economic loss. Maritime trade supplied cities, moved armies, and enriched nations throughout the Roman world. The judgment resembles the lament over Tyre’s ruined shipping and trade in Ezekiel 27, and anticipates the collapse of Babylon’s commerce in Revelation 18:17–19. Human wealth, industry, and international power cannot withstand the judgments of God. The devastation also prepares for the final renewal of creation, when God establishes the new heaven and earth.

2Ch 20:37 Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah…
1Ki 22:48 Jehoshaphat built ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir…
Psa 48:7 With a wind from the east You wrecked the ships of Tarshish.

Then the third angel sounded his trumpet,

The third trumpet continues the orderly sequence of judgments released from heaven in response to the prayers of God’s suffering people. God’s judgments are neither random nor uncontrolled; they unfold according to His sovereign purpose and call the world to recognize His authority.

Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…
1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven…
Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…

and a great star burning like a torch fell from heaven

A real, catastrophic object descends from the sky with blazing intensity. The event displays God’s command over creation and recalls the plagues of Egypt, where the Lord used the natural world to judge rebellion. The star is identified in the following verse as Wormwood, emphasizing the bitter and deadly result of its fall.

Rev 9:1 Then the fifth angel sounded his trumpet,…
Isa 14:12 How you have fallen from heaven, O day star…
Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning…

and landed on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.

The judgment reaches freshwater sources, striking the waters most necessary for human life. One third indicates severe yet limited judgment, leaving opportunity for repentance before the final outpouring of God’s wrath. The contamination of rivers and springs reverses the life-giving purpose of water and warns that humanity cannot reject the Creator while depending upon His provision.

Rev 16:4 And the third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers…
Exo 7:20-21 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded;…
Jer 9:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…

The name of the star is Wormwood.

Wormwood was associated with bitterness, poison, and divine judgment in the Old Testament (Jeremiah 9:15; Lamentations 3:19). The falling star serves under God’s sovereign command, bringing a judgment that corresponds to its name. Earlier biblical warnings compare idolatry and covenant rebellion to a root that produces wormwood (Deuteronomy 29:18).

Pro 5:4 in the end she is bitter as wormwood, …
Lam 3:19 Remember my affliction and wandering, …
Amo 5:7 There are those who turn justice into wormwood…

A third of the waters turned bitter like wormwood oil,

The judgment strikes springs and rivers, the sources of drinking water necessary for life. A third indicates a severe but limited judgment, leaving room for survivors to recognize God’s warning and repent. The corruption of water recalls the first plague upon Egypt, when the Nile became undrinkable and brought death to the land (Exodus 7:20–21).

Exo 15:23-25 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink the water…
Jer 9:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
Jer 8:14 Why are we just sitting here? Gather together, let us flee…

and many people died from the bitter waters.

Bitter water becomes an instrument of physical death, revealing the terrible consequences of sin and rebellion against God. The judgment also overturns human security, since resources meant to sustain life become deadly under the Creator’s decree.

Num 5:27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has defiled…
2Ki 2:19-22 Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please note,…
Jer 23:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

Then the fourth angel sounded his trumpet,

The fourth trumpet continues the ordered judgments released from heaven. The first three trumpets struck the earth, sea, and fresh waters; the fourth reaches the lights that govern day and night. God’s authority extends over the whole created order, including the heavenly bodies established to mark days, seasons, and years.

Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…
Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…
1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven…

and a third of the sun and moon and stars were struck.

The judgment recalls the darkness God sent upon Egypt before the exodus, demonstrating His supremacy over creation and over every false object of worship. The sun, moon, and stars do not operate independently; they remain subject to their Creator. A third is affected, showing that the judgment is devastating but still restrained. Mercy remains present amid wrath, leaving opportunity for repentance.

Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days:…
Jol 2:10 Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble.…
Luk 21:25-26 There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars…

A third of the stars were darkened,

Old Testament prophets associated the darkening of heavenly lights with the day of the Lord and the overthrow of proud powers. The darkened stars contribute to a real cosmic disruption while also revealing the collapse of human confidence in earthly security, political authority, and false religion. Nothing regarded as permanent can stand untouched when God acts in judgment.

Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations…
Ezk 32:7-8 When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens…

a third of the day was without light,

Daylight is diminished, disrupting ordinary life and signaling that judgment has reached a new intensity. The darkness recalls the supernatural darkness surrounding Christ’s crucifixion, when the righteous judgment deserved by sinners fell upon Him. Those who reject the Light of the world face increasing darkness, yet Christ remains the refuge for all who turn to Him.

Amo 8:9 And in that day, declares the Lord GOD…
Luk 23:44-45 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness…

and a third of the night as well.

Darkness affects both the hours of labor and the hours of rest, showing that no part of life remains beyond the reach of God’s judgment. The altered rhythm of day and night warns the world that the final reckoning is approaching. The partial loss of light points forward to the lasting contrast between those who dwell with the Lamb in God’s light and those who remain in darkness.

Job 3:4-9 If only that day had turned to darkness!…
Mic 3:6 Therefore night will come over you without visions…
Exo 10:21-23 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand”…

And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead,

John sees the eagle crossing the midheaven, the place of maximum visibility, so that its warning reaches the whole world. Eagles elsewhere portray the speed and irresistible force of approaching judgment (Deuteronomy 28:49; Hosea 8:1). The creature’s elevated flight also reflects heaven’s authority over events unfolding on earth.

Hos 8:1 Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms…
Hab 1:8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves…
Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…

calling in a loud voice,

The cry is public, urgent, and impossible to dismiss. Heaven announces the coming judgments before they fall, displaying God’s righteousness in warning mankind and calling sinners to repentance.

Rev 18:2 And he cried out in a mighty voice: “Fallen, fallen…
Rev 5:2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice,…

“Woe! Woe! Woe to those who dwell on the earth,

Three woes correspond to the final three trumpet judgments. In Revelation, those who dwell on the earth are not merely earthly inhabitants but people whose loyalties remain fixed on the rebellious world system rather than on Christ. The repeated woe signals intensifying divine judgment upon persistent unbelief.

Rev 18:10 In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance…
Rev 3:10 Because you have kept My command to persevere,…
Isa 24:17-18 Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth.…

because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the remaining three angels!”

The first four trumpets have brought devastating harm to the earth, sea, waters, and heavens, yet the final judgments will strike humanity more directly. Trumpets historically summoned Israel for war, worship, or assembly; these heavenly trumpets proclaim that the King is advancing in judgment. The warnings reveal that God’s wrath is neither random nor uncontrolled, but moves toward the final defeat of evil and the establishment of Christ’s kingdom.

Rev 9:12 The first woe has passed. Behold, two woes…
Rev 11:14 The second woe has passed. Behold, the third woe is coming…
Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…
