Blasphemy and Authority of the Beast

Topical Encyclopedia
Blasphemy, in biblical terms, refers to the act of showing contempt or lack of reverence for God, sacred things, or religious doctrines. It is considered a grave sin throughout the Scriptures, as it directly challenges the holiness and sovereignty of God. The concept of blasphemy is rooted in the Old Testament, where it is explicitly prohibited. Leviticus 24:16 states, "Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must surely be put to death. The whole congregation must stone him. Whether he is a foreign resident or a native, if he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death."

In the New Testament, blasphemy continues to be a serious offense. Jesus addresses the issue of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which He describes as an unforgivable sin. In Matthew 12:31-32 , Jesus says, "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come."

Blasphemy is not limited to verbal expressions but can also include actions and attitudes that dishonor God. The Apostle Paul, in his letters, warns against behaviors that could be considered blasphemous, urging believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling and to avoid any form of speech or conduct that might bring reproach upon the name of Christ.

Authority of the Beast

The concept of the "Beast" and its authority is primarily found in the Book of Revelation, where it symbolizes a powerful, oppressive entity that stands in opposition to God and His people. The Beast is often interpreted as a representation of corrupt political systems or leaders who wield authority in a manner that is antithetical to God's kingdom.

Revelation 13:1-2 introduces the Beast: "Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads rising out of the sea. There were ten royal crowns on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. The beast I saw was like a leopard, with the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority."

The authority of the Beast is depicted as being derived from the dragon, identified as Satan, who empowers the Beast to deceive and dominate the inhabitants of the earth. This authority is characterized by blasphemy, as the Beast speaks arrogant words against God and seeks to usurp His rightful place. Revelation 13:5-6 states, "The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and blasphemous words, and authority to act for forty-two months. And the beast opened its mouth to blaspheme against God and slander His name and His tabernacle—those who dwell in heaven."

The authority of the Beast is temporary and ultimately subject to God's sovereign plan. Revelation assures believers that despite the Beast's apparent power, it will be defeated by Christ at His return. This serves as a reminder to Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, resisting the deceptive allure of worldly power and authority that stands in opposition to God's eternal kingdom.
