Definition and Context:
The term "endeavor" refers to a conscientious or determined effort to achieve a particular goal. In a biblical context, endeavoring often involves striving to live according to God's will, pursuing righteousness, and working diligently in service to God and others. The concept of endeavor is closely tied to themes of perseverance, diligence, and faithfulness.

Biblical References and Themes:

1. Diligence in Faith and Works:
The Bible frequently encourages believers to be diligent in their faith and works. In 2 Peter 1:5-7 , the apostle Peter exhorts believers to "make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love." This passage highlights the importance of actively pursuing spiritual growth and moral excellence.

2. Striving for Peace and Unity:
Endeavoring to maintain peace and unity within the body of Christ is a significant biblical theme. Ephesians 4:3 urges believers to be "diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." This involves making a concerted effort to foster harmony and understanding among fellow Christians, reflecting the unity that is found in the Spirit.

3. Perseverance in Trials:
The Bible acknowledges that believers will face trials and challenges, yet it calls for perseverance. James 1:12 states, "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him." Here, endeavoring is linked to enduring hardships with faith, trusting in God's promises.

4. Laboring for the Gospel:
The apostle Paul often speaks of his own endeavors in spreading the Gospel. In 1 Thessalonians 2:9 , he reminds the Thessalonians, "Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and toil; we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God." Paul's example demonstrates the importance of hard work and dedication in ministry.

5. Seeking God's Approval:
Believers are called to endeavor to live lives that are pleasing to God. In 2 Timothy 2:15 , Paul advises Timothy, "Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth." This involves a commitment to studying Scripture and living in accordance with its teachings.

Practical Application:
Endeavoring in the Christian life involves a balance of faith and action. Believers are encouraged to pursue spiritual growth, maintain unity, persevere through difficulties, labor for the Gospel, and seek God's approval in all things. This requires a heart committed to God and a willingness to put forth effort in aligning one's life with His purposes.

ENDEAVOR

en-de'-ver:

The sense of this word has suffered weakening since the time of the King James Version. Then it implied utmost exertion and success; now rather forlorn hope and possible failure. Thus the Revised Version (British and American) reads "giving diligence," "give diligence," for the King James Version "endeavoring," "endeavor," in Ephesians 4:3 2 Peter 1:15, respectively; but "endeavored" is suffered to remain in 1 Thessalonians 2:17 (spoudazo, "hasten," "exert oneself"). Compare also Acts 16:10, the King James Version "endeavored," the Revised Version (British and American) "sought" (Greek zeteo, "seek").
