The term "flouted" refers to the act of openly disregarding or showing contempt for a rule, law, or authority. In the context of the Bible, flouting often involves a willful disobedience or rebellion against God's commandments, laws, or established order. This behavior is frequently depicted as sinful and contrary to the righteous path that believers are called to follow.

Biblical Instances of Flouting

1. Israel's Rebellion: Throughout the Old Testament, the nation of Israel is depicted as flouting God's commandments, despite His continuous guidance and provision. In the wilderness, the Israelites repeatedly disobeyed God's instructions, leading to severe consequences. For instance, in Numbers 14:11 , the Lord said to Moses, "How long will this people treat Me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in Me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?"

2. The Golden Calf: One of the most notable instances of flouting God's commandments is the worship of the golden calf. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law, the Israelites constructed an idol, directly violating the commandment against idolatry. Exodus 32:8 states, "They have quickly turned aside from the way I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf, have bowed down to it, and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’"

3. King Saul's Disobedience: King Saul is another example of flouting divine authority. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul disobeys God's command to completely destroy the Amalekites and their possessions. Instead, he spares King Agag and the best of the livestock. Samuel confronts Saul in 1 Samuel 15:23 , saying, "For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance is like the wickedness of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king."

4. Prophets' Warnings: The prophets frequently warned Israel and Judah about the consequences of flouting God's laws. Jeremiah, for example, lamented the people's persistent disobedience and idolatry. In Jeremiah 6:19 , God declares, "Hear, O earth! I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their own schemes, because they have not listened to My words and have rejected My law."

Theological Implications

Flouting God's commandments is seen as a serious offense in the biblical narrative, often leading to divine judgment. It reflects a heart that is hardened against God's will and a refusal to acknowledge His sovereignty. The Bible consistently calls believers to obedience, emphasizing that true faith is demonstrated through adherence to God's laws and commands.

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the concept of flouting God's authority is addressed through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus criticized the Pharisees and religious leaders for their hypocrisy and for setting aside God's commandments in favor of human traditions. In Mark 7:9 , Jesus says, "You neatly set aside the commandment of God to maintain your own tradition."

The apostle Paul also warns against flouting God's grace by continuing in sin. In Romans 6:1-2 , he writes, "What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?"

Conclusion

The Bible presents flouting as a grave sin that leads to separation from God and His blessings. Believers are called to live in obedience to God's commandments, recognizing His authority and responding to His grace with faithful adherence to His will.
