Humility

Humility is a fundamental virtue in Christian theology, often seen as the foundation of a believer's relationship with God and others. It is characterized by a modest view of one's own importance and a recognition of one's dependence on God. The Bible frequently emphasizes humility as essential for spiritual growth and maturity.

In the Old Testament, humility is often associated with wisdom and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 22:4 states, "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life." This verse highlights the blessings that accompany a humble heart, suggesting that humility leads to divine favor and prosperity.

The New Testament further develops the concept of humility, particularly through the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:3-8 instructs believers, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross."

Jesus' life and sacrificial death serve as the ultimate model of humility. His willingness to forsake divine privileges and embrace servanthood underscores the Christian call to live selflessly and prioritize the needs of others.

James 4:6 reinforces the importance of humility, stating, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage underscores the spiritual principle that humility attracts God's grace, while pride incurs His opposition.

Brokenness

Brokenness, in a biblical context, refers to a state of contrition and repentance before God. It is the acknowledgment of one's sinfulness and the need for divine intervention and healing. Brokenness is not merely an emotional experience but a profound spiritual realization that leads to transformation and renewal.

The Psalms frequently express themes of brokenness, particularly in the context of repentance. Psalm 51:17 declares, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." This verse highlights that God values a heart that is genuinely repentant and open to His correction.

In the New Testament, brokenness is closely linked to the process of sanctification and spiritual growth. Jesus' Beatitudes, found in Matthew 5, begin with a blessing on those who are "poor in spirit," which can be understood as a form of spiritual brokenness. Matthew 5:3 states, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." This beatitude suggests that recognizing one's spiritual poverty is the first step toward receiving the riches of God's kingdom.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the theme of brokenness in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 , where he writes, "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." Paul's words reveal that brokenness and weakness are opportunities for God's strength to be manifested in a believer's life.

They involve a recognition of one's limitations and a reliance on God's grace and strength. Through humility and brokenness, believers are drawn closer to God and are transformed into the likeness of Christ.
