Humility

Humility is a central virtue in the Christian faith, characterized by a modest view of one's own importance and a recognition of one's dependence on God. The Bible consistently highlights humility as a trait that is pleasing to God and essential for spiritual growth. In the Old Testament, humility is often associated with wisdom and the fear of the LORD. Proverbs 11:2 states, "When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom." This verse underscores the idea that humility is foundational to acquiring true wisdom.

The New Testament further emphasizes humility through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:5-8 describes the humility of Christ: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." This passage illustrates the ultimate example of humility, as Jesus willingly set aside His divine privileges to serve humanity.

Humility is also a prerequisite for receiving God's grace. James 4:6 declares, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This verse highlights the spiritual principle that humility opens the door to God's favor and blessings, while pride creates a barrier.

The Fear of the LORD

The fear of the LORD is a profound reverence and awe for God, recognizing His holiness, power, and authority. It is not a fear that leads to terror but rather a deep respect that influences one's actions and decisions. The fear of the LORD is foundational to wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

In the Old Testament, the fear of the LORD is often linked to obedience and righteousness. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 commands, "And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God by walking in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD that I am giving you this day for your own good?" This passage emphasizes that fearing the LORD involves a commitment to live according to His commandments.

The New Testament continues to affirm the importance of the fear of the LORD. Acts 9:31 describes the early church: "Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, and it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord." This verse indicates that the fear of the LORD was integral to the spiritual vitality and growth of the early Christian community.

Humility and the fear of the LORD are interconnected virtues that lead to a life of wisdom, obedience, and blessing. Proverbs 22:4 encapsulates this relationship: "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life." Together, these virtues form the foundation of a life that honors God and experiences His favor.
