Definition and Importance
Humility in worship is the posture of recognizing one's own lowliness and God's supreme greatness. It involves approaching God with reverence, acknowledging His sovereignty, and submitting to His will. This attitude is foundational to true worship, as it aligns the heart with God's purposes and character.

Biblical Foundations
The Bible consistently emphasizes humility as a key component of worship. In the Old Testament, the prophet Micah encapsulates this in Micah 6:8, "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" This verse highlights humility as a requirement for a life pleasing to God.

In the New Testament, Jesus Himself models humility. Philippians 2:5-8 describes how Christ, though being in the form of God, "humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." This ultimate act of humility is the foundation for Christian worship, as believers are called to emulate Christ's example.

Expressions of Humility in Worship
1. Prayer: Humility in prayer is demonstrated by acknowledging one's dependence on God. The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18:9-14 illustrates this. The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even look up to heaven but beat his breast and said, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner!" Jesus commends this attitude, saying, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

2. Confession and Repentance: True worship involves confessing sins and seeking God's forgiveness. Psalm 51:17 states, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." This verse underscores the importance of a repentant heart in worship.

3. Service: Humility is also expressed through serving others. In John 13:14-15, Jesus washes His disciples' feet and instructs them to do likewise, teaching that service is an act of worship. "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet."

4. Submission to God's Will: Worship involves surrendering personal desires to God's will. James 4:10 encourages believers, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you." This submission is an act of trust and reverence.

The Role of Humility in Corporate Worship
In the context of corporate worship, humility fosters unity and edification within the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:2-3 urges believers to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." Humility allows for the Spirit's work, creating an environment where God is glorified and believers are built up.

Warnings Against Pride
Scripture warns against pride, which is antithetical to true worship. Proverbs 16:18 cautions, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Pride disrupts communion with God and others, hindering genuine worship. The account of King Uzziah in 2 Chronicles 26 serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of pride in worship. Uzziah's pride led to his downfall, as he unlawfully entered the temple to burn incense, resulting in God's judgment.

Conclusion
Humility in worship is essential for a genuine relationship with God. It involves recognizing His greatness, confessing our sins, serving others, and submitting to His will. Through humility, believers align their hearts with God's purposes, creating a worship that is pleasing and acceptable to Him.
