It is primarily known as the site of a decisive battle between the Israelites, led by Moses, and the Amorites under King Sihon. This battle is a pivotal moment in Israel's journey to the Promised Land, marking the beginning of their conquest of territories east of the Jordan River. Biblical References: Jahaz is mentioned in several passages within the Old Testament, including Numbers 21:23, Deuteronomy 2:32, Joshua 13:18, Judges 11:20, 1 Chronicles 6:78, and Isaiah 15:4. These references highlight its geographical and historical significance. 1. Numbers 21:23 : "But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole army and marched out to the wilderness to confront Israel. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel." 2. Deuteronomy 2:32 : "So Sihon and his whole army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz." 3. Joshua 13:18 : Jahaz is listed among the cities in the territory allotted to the tribe of Reuben. 4. Judges 11:20 : "But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered all his troops, camped at Jahaz, and fought with Israel." 5. 1 Chronicles 6:78 : Jahaz is mentioned as part of the pasturelands given to the Levites. 6. Isaiah 15:4 : The city is referenced in a prophecy against Moab, indicating its continued existence and relevance in later periods. Historical and Geographical Context: Jahaz was located in the territory east of the Jordan River, within the region historically inhabited by the Amorites. After the Israelites' victory over Sihon, this area became part of the land allocated to the tribe of Reuben. The exact location of Jahaz is not definitively known today, but it is generally believed to have been situated in the central part of the Transjordan, possibly near modern-day Jordan. Significance in Israel's Conquest: The battle at Jahaz is a critical event in the narrative of Israel's conquest of Canaan. It demonstrates God's provision and support for Israel as they faced formidable enemies. The victory over Sihon at Jahaz allowed the Israelites to gain control over a significant portion of land, which was crucial for their settlement and future expansion. Role in Prophecy and Later History: Jahaz's mention in Isaiah 15:4 as part of a prophecy against Moab suggests that it remained an important location beyond the initial conquest period. This indicates that Jahaz continued to hold strategic and possibly economic significance in the region. Cultural and Theological Insights: The account of Jahaz underscores themes of divine intervention and fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. It serves as a reminder of the importance of faith and obedience in the face of challenges. The victory at Jahaz is often seen as a testament to God's faithfulness in delivering His people and granting them the land He promised to their ancestors. Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary JahazATS Bible Dictionary JahazJAHAZAH or JAHZAH, a city in the north of Moab, near which Moses defeated Sihon, Numbers 21:23. It was in the limits of Reuben, and was a Levitical city, Joshua 21:36. In Isaiah 15:4, and Jeremiah 48:21, it appears as again in the hands of the Moabites. Easton's Bible Dictionary Trodden down (called also Jahaza, Joshua 13:18; Jahazah, 21:36; Jahzah, 1 Chronicles 6:78), a town where Sihon was defeated, in the borders of Moab and in the land of the Ammonites beyond Jordan, and north of the river Arnon (Numbers 21:23; Deuteronomy 2:32). It was situated in the tribe of Reuben, and was assigned to the Merarite Levites (Joshua 13:18; 21:36). Here was fought the decisive battle in which Sihon (q.v.) was completely routed, and his territory (the modern Belka) came into the possession of Israel. This town is mentioned in the denunciations of the prophets against Moab (Isaiah 15:4; Jeremiah 48:34). International Standard Bible Encyclopedia JAHAZja'-haz (yahats, Isaiah 16:4 Jeremiah 48:34, yahatsah, or yahtsah, Numbers 21:23 Deuteronomy 2:32 Joshua 13:18; Joshua 21:36, the King James Version "Jahazah"; Judges 11:20 Jeremiah 48:21 1 Chronicles 6:78, "Jahzah"): This is the place where in a great battle Israel overwhelmed Sihon king of the Amorites, and then took possession of all his territory (Numbers 21:23, etc.). It is named along with Beth-baal-meon and Kedemoth (Joshua 13:18), with Kedemoth (Joshua 21:37) pointing to a position in the Southeast of the Amorite territory. It was given to Reuben by Moses, and was one of the cities in the portion of that tribe assigned to the Merarite Levites. Mesha (MS, ll. 18 if) says that the king of Israel dwelt in Jahaz when at war with him. Mesha drove him out, and the city passed into the hands of Moab. It is referred to as a city of Moab in Isaiah 15:4 Jeremiah 48:21, 34. Cheyne thinks that either Jahaz or Kedemoth must be represented today by the important ruins of Umm er-Recac, about 2 1/2 hours North of Dibon toward the desert (EB, under the word).
