Etymology and Meaning:
The name Nethan'el (Hebrew: נְתַנְאֵל) means "God has given" or "Gift of God." It is derived from the Hebrew words "nathan" (נָתַן), meaning "to give," and "El" (אֵל), a common name for God in the Hebrew Bible.

Biblical References:
Nethan'el is a name that appears several times in the Old Testament, associated with different individuals. The name is indicative of the divine favor and blessing, as it signifies a gift from God.

1. Nethan'el, Son of Zuar:
Nethan'el, the son of Zuar, is mentioned as a leader of the tribe of Issachar during the wilderness period. He is one of the twelve tribal leaders who assisted Moses in the census of the Israelites. Numbers 1:8 states, "from Issachar, Nethan'el son of Zuar." He also played a role in the arrangement of the camp and the order of march, as recorded in Numbers 2:5.

2. Nethan'el, a Priest:
Another Nethan'el is listed among the priests in the time of David. In 1 Chronicles 24:6 , he is mentioned in the context of the division of the priestly duties: "The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethan'el, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and the officials, and Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of the families of the priests and the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar."

3. Nethan'el, a Leader in the Time of Ezra:
In the post-exilic period, a Nethan'el is noted as one of the leaders who returned with Ezra from Babylon. Ezra 8:16 mentions him in the context of gathering Levites for the journey to Jerusalem: "Then I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nethan'el, Zechariah, and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning."

4. Nethan'el, a Musician:
In the time of David, Nethan'el is also identified as a musician. In 1 Chronicles 15:24 , he is listed among those who played musical instruments during the transportation of the Ark of the Covenant: "Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethan'el, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer the priests were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be gatekeepers for the ark."

Theological Significance:
The recurring presence of individuals named Nethan'el in various roles—tribal leader, priest, musician, and leader in the return from exile—highlights the diverse ways in which God's gifts manifest in the lives of His people. Each Nethan'el serves as a reminder of the divine provision and the importance of faithful service in different capacities within the community of Israel. The name itself underscores the belief in God's sovereignty and generosity, as each Nethan'el is seen as a recipient of God's grace and a contributor to the fulfillment of His purposes.
