Amon, the son of Manasseh, was the fifteenth king of Judah, known for his brief and wicked reign. His account is primarily recorded in the Old Testament books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles. Amon's reign is marked by a continuation of the idolatrous practices initiated by his father, Manasseh, which led to further spiritual decline in the kingdom of Judah.
Background and Ascension to the ThroneAmon was born to King Manasseh and his wife, Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah (
2 Kings 21:19). He ascended to the throne at the age of twenty-two and reigned for two years in Jerusalem (
2 Kings 21:19). His reign is dated to approximately 642–640 BC.
Idolatry and WickednessAmon's reign is characterized by his commitment to the idolatrous practices that his father had established. The Bible records that Amon "did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done" (
2 Kings 21:20). He served and worshiped the idols that Manasseh had set up, forsaking the God of his ancestors. Amon's actions are described as a direct continuation of the sins of his father, indicating a lack of repentance or reform.
Rejection of the LORDAmon's rejection of the LORD is further emphasized in
2 Chronicles 33:22, which states, "He did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon worshiped and sacrificed to all the idols that Manasseh had made" . This passage highlights Amon's deliberate choice to follow in the footsteps of his father's idolatry, rather than seeking the LORD.
Assassination and AftermathAmon's reign came to an abrupt end when he was assassinated by his own officials in his palace (
2 Kings 21:23). This act of treachery against the king reflects the instability and moral decay within the kingdom during his rule. Following his assassination, the people of the land executed those who had conspired against him and made his son Josiah king in his place (
2 Kings 21:24).
LegacyAmon's legacy is one of wickedness and idolatry, serving as a cautionary tale of the consequences of turning away from the LORD. His brief reign is overshadowed by the subsequent reforms of his son Josiah, who sought to restore the worship of the LORD and rid Judah of idolatry. Amon's life and reign serve as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God and the dangers of following in the path of unrighteousness.
