Topical Encyclopedia Amaziah, the son of Joash, was the ninth king of Judah, reigning in Jerusalem after the death of his father. His reign is recorded in 2 Kings 14 and 2 Chronicles 25. Amaziah's rule is marked by a mixture of obedience to God and significant failures, ultimately leading to a conspiracy against him.Amaziah began his reign by executing the officials who had murdered his father, Joash, but he adhered to the Mosaic Law by not putting their children to death, as stated in 2 Kings 14:6: "Yet he did not put the sons of the assassins to death, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: 'Fathers must not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.'" Amaziah's early reign was characterized by military success, including a notable victory over the Edomites. However, his decision to bring back the gods of the Edomites and worship them led to his downfall. A prophet warned Amaziah of his folly, but he refused to listen, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 25:15-16: "Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent a prophet to him, who said, 'Why have you sought this people's gods, which could not deliver their own people from your hand?' While he was still speaking, the king said to him, 'Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?' So the prophet stopped but said, 'I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.'" Amaziah's pride led him to challenge Jehoash, the king of Israel, to battle. This confrontation resulted in a humiliating defeat for Judah, with Jehoash capturing Amaziah and breaking down the wall of Jerusalem (2 Kings 14:11-14). The culmination of Amaziah's reign was marked by a conspiracy against him. After his defeat and subsequent release, Amaziah lived for some time in Jerusalem. However, his unfaithfulness and the discontent among his people led to a conspiracy that forced him to flee to Lachish. The conspirators pursued him and killed him there, as detailed in 2 Kings 14:19: "Now a conspiracy was formed against Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there." Amaziah's body was brought back to Jerusalem, where he was buried with his ancestors in the City of David (2 Kings 14:20). His son, Azariah (also known as Uzziah), succeeded him as king. Amaziah's life serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride, idolatry, and ignoring divine warnings. His reign illustrates the consequences of turning away from God and the inevitable judgment that follows such actions.
