Jacob, also known as Israel, is a patriarch in the Hebrew Bible, and his account is foundational to the history of the Israelites. Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rebekah and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. He had twelve sons, who became the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel. These sons were born to Jacob through his two wives, Leah and Rachel, and their maidservants, Zilpah and Bilhah.

1. Reuben: Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son, born to Leah. His birth is recorded in Genesis 29:32: "And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, 'Because the LORD has looked upon my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.'"

2. Simeon: Simeon was Leah's second son. Genesis 29:33 states, "And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, 'Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son also.' So she named him Simeon."

3. Levi: Levi, the third son of Leah, is mentioned in Genesis 29:34: "Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, 'Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.' Therefore he was named Levi."

4. Judah: Judah was Leah's fourth son. Genesis 29:35 records, "And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, 'This time I will praise the LORD.' Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children."

5. Dan: Dan was the first son of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant. Genesis 30:5-6 states, "And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. Then Rachel said, 'God has vindicated me; He has heard my voice and given me a son.' Therefore she named him Dan."

6. Naphtali: Naphtali was Bilhah's second son. Genesis 30:7-8 records, "Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, 'With mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.' So she named him Naphtali."

7. Gad: Gad was the first son of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. Genesis 30:9-11 states, "When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. And Leah’s maidservant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. Then Leah said, 'How fortunate!' So she named him Gad."

8. Asher: Asher was Zilpah's second son. Genesis 30:12-13 records, "When Leah’s maidservant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son, Leah said, 'How happy I am! For the women will call me happy.' So she named him Asher."

9. Issachar: Issachar was Leah's fifth son. Genesis 30:17-18 states, "And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. Then Leah said, 'God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband.' So she named him Issachar."

10. Zebulun: Zebulun was Leah's sixth son. Genesis 30:19-20 records, "And Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 'God has given me a good gift,' Leah said. 'This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.' So she named him Zebulun."

11. Joseph: Joseph was the first son of Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife. Genesis 30:22-24 states, "Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb, and she conceived and bore a son. 'God has taken away my shame,' she said. She named him Joseph, saying, 'May the LORD add to me another son.'"

12. Benjamin: Benjamin was Rachel's second son and the youngest of Jacob's children. His birth is recorded in Genesis 35:16-18: "While they were still on the move, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult. During her severe labor, the midwife said to her, 'Do not be afraid, for you are having another son.' And with her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-Oni. But his father called him Benjamin."

These twelve sons of Jacob are significant figures in biblical history, each becoming the ancestor of one of the tribes of Israel. Their accounts and the blessings Jacob bestowed upon them are detailed in the Book of Genesis, particularly in Genesis 49, where Jacob prophesies over each son before his death.
