Prayer: Importunity in Moses

The concept of importunity in prayer is vividly illustrated in the life of Moses, one of the most prominent figures in the Old Testament. Importunity, characterized by persistent and earnest pleading, is a key aspect of Moses' intercessory role for the Israelites. His relationship with God is marked by a deep sense of responsibility and a willingness to engage in fervent prayer on behalf of his people.

Intercession for Israel

One of the most striking examples of Moses' importunity in prayer is found in the aftermath of the Israelites' sin with the golden calf. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the people grew impatient and fashioned an idol, provoking God's wrath. In Exodus 32:9-14, God expresses His intention to destroy the Israelites and make a great nation out of Moses. However, Moses implores the LORD, saying:

"Why should Your anger burn against Your people, whom You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians declare, ‘He brought them out with evil intent, to kill them in the mountains and wipe them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on Your people. Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, to whom You swore by Your very self: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and I will give your descendants all this land I promised, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” (Exodus 32:11-13)

Moses' prayer is marked by a bold appeal to God's promises and character. His importunity is evident as he reasons with God, reminding Him of His covenant and the potential dishonor to His name among the nations. The LORD relents from the disaster He had threatened, demonstrating the power of persistent intercession.

Pleading for God's Presence

Another instance of Moses' importunity is seen in Exodus 33:12-17, where Moses seeks assurance of God's presence with the Israelites as they journey to the Promised Land. Moses understands the necessity of God's presence for the success and identity of the nation. He prays:

"If Your Presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. For how then can it be known that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight unless You go with us? How else will we be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?" (Exodus 33:15-16)

Moses' insistence on God's presence highlights his understanding of the unique relationship between God and His people. His importunity is rewarded as God assures him, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14).

Intercession for Miriam

In Numbers 12, Moses' importunity is again demonstrated when his sister Miriam is struck with leprosy for speaking against him. Despite the personal nature of the offense, Moses cries out to the LORD, "O God, please heal her!" (Numbers 12:13). His brief yet fervent prayer reflects his compassion and urgency, and God responds by healing Miriam after seven days.

Importunity and Leadership

Moses' persistent prayers reveal his deep commitment to his role as a leader and intercessor. His importunity is not merely a display of human persistence but a reflection of his intimate relationship with God. Moses' prayers are characterized by a profound understanding of God's character, promises, and the needs of the people he leads. Through his example, the importance of earnest and persistent prayer is underscored, demonstrating its vital role in the life of a believer.
